140 years ago the Twin Cities actually had this, even before electric streetcars arrived. By 1900 there were 9 Class I railways and many stations. 3 different lines ran between the 2 downtowns. Travel time under steam power with stops? 24 minutes. This 1897 map even has cross-city bicycle routes.
