Environmentalism isn't a charitable softness for nature, but an acknowledgement that humans are also animals and that a system of endless production is largely more interested in turning the world into a parking lot than in keeping *any* animals alive.

I'll piggy back on this to say that it's not uncommon for animal shelters to offer pet food assistance in these situations as well. So if you either want to offer help or need it you may want to reach out to shelters in your area to ask about it.
With SNAP benefits going out late, nonprofits are begging for pet food donations to prevent desperate owners from surrendering their dogs and cats to animal shelters.
Although SNAP can’t be used for pet food, the food assistance program helps low-income families free up money to purchase kibble.
