A TENDER HEART - Annette suffers from dissociative amnesia and unfortunately for her charming Tinder date, who has his own nefarious intentions, she’s starting to solve the puzzle of her past.
→ She sits on the fleor, hands in her lap as it looms before her like a womb; dark and tepic Something drips onto the pale yellow linoleum tile as the Annette sits in a trancelike state fingers twitching. "Did you eat it?" Her mother's voice is panicked, she shakes Annette until her teeth rattle. Her mother had been preparing rabbit stew, and had asked Annette to chop vegetables when it happened. Annette had been chopping carrots when her fingers had started to tingle as if she'd stuck a fork into an electrical outlet. The spasms were subtle at first, but as the scent of the roasting rabbit intensified, her vision blurred, and the buzzing from the barn returned, filling her mind with static like her body was stuck in an in-between place, where something angry and wild writhed beneath her skin, desperate to be free. If she just relented control, if she just relaxed her grip on the knife, and let her body melt, meld, fall apart and reform.. Annette was jerked back to reality by her mother's palm cracking across her cheek. Her mother, her gentle, sweet mother, was on her knees in front of Annette, wild-eyed and sobbing, begging Annette to come back to her; as if she were a vapour instead of a twelve year old girl. "What happened?" Annette asked dazed, her gaze unfocused, body limp as if she'd run a marathon. Her's mother's resounding silence permeated the room like a thick smoke, filling even the smallest cracks and crevices with nothingness. 7 Later that night when Annette is in bed, her heart races as she recalls the tantalizing scent of the roasting rabbit simmering in broth, and a wave of adrenaline washes over her so intense that she swoons. Taking a deep breath, her vision blurs as she tries to focus on the tiny imperfections on her bedroom ceiling; the little divots, a yellowing water stain, a long abandoned spider's web.
