Putin held a closed meeting for the Russian oligarchs where he stated that he demands the “entire Donbas region”, referring to the “Anchoridge agreements”.

Remember, I guesstimated we will find out what was actually said there months and years from now..?

Again, I will re-up my deeply unpopular view that the core problem underlying was the failed policy response to the Global Financial Crisis, & yes, that happened not only in 🇬🇧 & 🇪🇺, but also here in 🇺🇸. We've never fully recovered.

And what about the immobilised Russian assets? They won't be touched, for now. The EU says it reserves "the right" to use the Russian assets to eventually repay the €90 billion in common borrowing.

But this is extremely hypothetical and won't be discussed anytime in the near future.

My letter in the Economist pushes back on its take on Europe and the second China shock.

The Economist lays out the profound pressure China is putting on EU manufacturing, but then proceeds to advocate the EU give up and switch to services à la the UK. That feels thin.

Pleased they published it.

The older I get the more convinced I am that the one of the main home-made threats to our liberal democracies is the inexorable pull of the status quo, or to put it differently, our leaders' complacency. Every time the worst fails to happen they take it as evidence that the policy's working.

Does it matter if Ukraine loses?
Ukraine is retreating and Russia is advancing, militarily and politically. Western leaders seem to underestimate both the impact of Ukraine’s defeat and the West’s ability to prevent it.
