I love how I don't even have to watch a show to know what happens, I can just live vicariously through the fandom posting untagged spoilers on social media without consideration.

imo, the idea that good prose should always aim to imitate natural language is poison in Lady Literature's heart

It's very good to read books, but those of us who read a lot of books probably have a lot more to learn from doing things in public spaces with other human beings

Book recommendations for this post US election Sunday. These two books are essential reading and also the reason why the outcome was not a shock to me and actually was exactly what I expected it to be. Both are incredibly well researched and beautifully written.

Writing is still the best thing. The absolutely best thing. I don’t know how to even explain how much it is the best thing.

My writing process is that I don't write, then for a while I write, then frustratingly I don't write again, then I'm old.

I'm attempting to reset my emotional state.
I remember and want to share this favorite poem.
For me, it captures the need for hope, in spite of a clear-eyed acceptance of reality.

Books are medicine. Not because they're escapist, but because they're human.

Reading is slowness, and nuance, and discovery—and compassion. It's attention in a world that's trying, at every turn, to distract you.

An author shares the intimacy of her thoughts, and for a moment, we're believers.

Also, folks: when I post word counts, know that I have journalism training and also my brain just runs a little fast. Everyone has their own inherent writing pace. There's no "right" daily pace. Readers don't read word counts. They read stories. Write at the speed that lets you write good stories.
