If the DEA had killed 80 innocent Americans in the course of apprehending one drug dealer, there would be riots. But we are so ghoulishly indifferent to the lives and humanity of people abroad that it's barely even part of the conversation.
A reminder that the US killed 80 people in Venezuela, and it would be nice if the US media cared enough to think that the life of a grandmother in Caracas whose building is destroyed by a US bomb matters as much as the life of a person in the US.

Stephen Miller's argument that the U.S. shouldn't take immigrants from "failed societies" overlooks the fact that the failure of other societies is what drives people to seek a better life here. It's what Miller's own ancestors did.

Magic Johnson was the grand marshal of the Rose Parade today, and as someone who remembers his November 1991 HIV announcement: if you had told anybody that day that he would be alive and healthy 34+ years later, I don't think they would have believed you. Medicine and research—they work.

Ken White nails it
This formulation is popular: contrasting SCOTUS' intolerance of race as an admissions factor with SCOTUS' tolerance of race as a detention factor. There are, in fact, doctrinal, historical, and logical distinctions between the positions, that one could use to dismiss this comparison.

But...
/1
"Harvard can't use race as a factor in admissions, but ICE can use race as a factor in detentions" is a retrenchment essentially to a pre-Civil War understanding of the Constitution. It's vanishingly few steps removed from "Latinos have no rights which the white man is bound to respect."

I've had a missile blow up next to my airplane, been shot at dozens of times by anti-aircraft fire, and launched into orbit — all for my country. I never thought I'd see a President call for my execution.

Trump doesn’t understand the Constitution, and we're all less safe for it.

In one hour summary in #Portland Natl. Guard Trial, USG lawyer manages to use word "agitator" 17 times. I haven't heard it that often since I was a boy in the segregated south. Important to note: "agitation" without more is protected by the First Amendment, which does not include a decorum proviso.

If things continue as they are, I can’t imagine a more patriotic way to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday than with massive #NoKings rallies on July 4, 2026. 🇺🇸
I know it’s too much to expect them to know their history, but if the American Revolution had a motto, it definitely would not have been “immigrants go home.”

It would have been “get your fucking soldiers out of our cities.”

Vance’s is a white guy whose entire political career was handed to him by billionaires — a career also fueled by the grievance that U.S. institutions conspire against white guys.
Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.
