A small (personal) example of this book’s intellectual dishonesty:

My father-in-law is reading In Covid’s Wake, and excitedly told me he found a passage where I’m quoted. The quote in question is me saying the FBI worked to censor speech on social media.

Huh? When did I say that?!

This is genuinely horrifying. Fact-free far-right agitprop given accolades by credible media across the political spectrum.

What can you do to be a better neighbor in the District?

D.C. native India Kea has ideas:
Ask A D.C. Native: What do you wish more people did to be better neighbors?
Aspiring to be a good neighbor in a city as richly diverse, vibrant, and dynamic as D.C. is essential and, honestly, a bit of an art form.

I’m not big on the religious side of Christmas, but lately I’ve been thinking of the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt: how tired and scared they must have been, pursued by a mad king into a foreign country. The new Polish president, endorsed by Trump, has ended the tradition of lighting a Menorah at Poland's presidential palace, a gesture of coming to terms with Jewish history. He said he ended the lighting because "I take my attachment to Christian values seriously." forward.com/opinion/7919...
Why Poland’s president canceled his menorah lighting — and how the West helped make that happen
Karol Nawrocki canceled menorah lighting at the presidential palace, part of a broader failure to combat antisemitism, Holocaust revisionism.

Elon Musk is worse at hiding it but this is the problem with all billionaires: they are a threat to democratic governance. They have an insatiable need to own and control everything. If you want to be free you have to curb their power, and demand political leaders who understand that

most americans (including, maybe even especially, all cops) believe (a) traffic laws are not "laws" so much as a game where you try to break the rules and every once in awhile get caught and pay a fine and that's the price of admission and (b) *they* can speed and it's ok, they're a good speeder

People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.

And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.
