Well, new platform means new people, so I may as well introduce myself. I'm a lawyer in Chicago, though I live in the western suburbs, and I'm just over 10 years into practice. This is a personal account, but my day job is Senior Counsel for the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board, a federal agency.
Seems like a good start. (No, I'm not in it. At least not yet. I'm not sure if I should be hurt or relieved.)
1/6 A new standard for public accountability is here. GLOW—Government Lawyers Oversight Watchdog—is officially launching today to hold government lawyers accountable. We're unveiling The Government Lawyers Database at glowlaw.org. #RuleOfLaw #Accountability

I like when game shows do special episodes for Veterans' Day because the contestants all talk about how they were a nurse or an engineer or a mechanic or a teacher, which is a reminder that you don't have to be a Hesgeth-approved "warfighter" to serve your country.

I'm old enough to remember when "the President" and "the White House" meant the same thing, because there was no visible separation. It's particularly weird because unlike Congressionally created agencies, the White House staff has never been anything except extensions of the President's will.
POLITICO: “.. The White House was blindsided by the idea, according to two people familiar with the situation .. and is now dealing with a furious backlash from conservative allies, business leaders and lawmakers.” 🤡

This is part of what Judge Ellis means when that Border Patrol's use of force "shocks the conscience" and shows no signs of stopping. Absolutely inhumane.
Here’s video of federal agents doing a drive by pepper spraying that hit a father and his one-year old on Saturday when the Feds were hitting Little Village and Cicero

And the truly craziest thing abt this cave is that someone seeing the invasion of Chicago firsthand, Dick Durbin, doesn't understand this.
seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

My family has been without half our income for 40 days. It has been.. very hard.

We are willing to feel that pain so people can have health care next year, or to undo these illegal recissions.

We are not willing to have been put through this for NOTHING.

Durbin's state is under siege and 1 year old got pepper-sprayed today by Trump's goons, so, naturally, he's caving

But, hey, he respected blue slips and comity

Trump is like a toddler: time he spends asleep is to be prized, not resented. Every minute he sleeps is a minute he is not tantruming or breaking things or smearing his own shit on things.

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

Shutting down the government is a big deal. People have been hurt in big ways as a result of the decision. To have that suffering be for nothing—to re-open the government without actually having protected people’s health insurance and economic well-being—is unconscionable.

I will also add:

I can do this for evictions in Illinois too, if SNAP benefits being cut off or the government shutdown means you can't make rent.
If you're arrested in Illinois for the means by which you acquire food for your family because of the government shutdown or loss of SNAP benefits, I can represent you pro bono. Email me at sheryl@weikallaw.com. As always, I will take as many cases as I can.

Yay trains!
I would love it if we could break the ski resort monopolies and then fund rail to bring us to snow. in general, not just in California.
Instead of CA HSR, we should have built passenger rail from San Jose to Lake Tahoe. Nobody likes making that drive in the winter, it's dangerous, clogged, and often shut down. Taking a train through snowy mountains to arrive at a chalet would be transcendent.

There are many songs about this city, but Tom Waits wrote one of the best, simply titled "Chicago." Out today, Mavis Staples' new album kicks off with her fantastic version of the song. I'm so glad to hear this quintessential Chicago singer putting her own stamp on it.

I've seen this go by a few times on TikTok now and I have to say, I love this idea. We need a way to convince people to keep running even if they don't win, maybe building the loss into it as a troll move is the secret.
