"We’ve elected people who’ve let the system be chipped away and who haven’t fought hard enough for it or made the hard decisions to prioritize transit over cars. Good things don’t stay good on their own. It can’t be the better way if we don’t insist on it," writes @shawnmicallef.bsky.social.

'Tis the season for the Salvation Army's We're Not Bigots Anymore PR blitz. Looking at their public facing material, you might start to believe them.

So in the festive spirit, have a 2024 SalvationArmy.org article on how trans and gay people are one of Satan's "most insidious and dominating" plots.

Let’s talk about the size of trucks & SUVs in the city. My column on the virtue & status signalling of vehicle bloat.
Shawn Micallef: This truck ad shows why Toronto needs smaller vehicles — if only the carmakers wanted to sell them
A car comically overloaded with plywood? It’s a good ad for a pickup — but also a sign of the incredible amount of money, weight and energy being wasted on

So far there is no evidence that this did not occur.
The claim "RFK Jr was not bitten by a zombie" is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that RFK Jr was indeed bitten by a zombie.

Hi Bluesky 👋

Small life update: I’m at the centre of a multimillion dollar lawsuit in Alberta launched by a failed candidate for Jason Kenney’s UCP

It may be the longest and most expensive media trial in Canadian history

I’m ready to go public about it and I want to share more details with you 🧵

Turns out... nope. It really is a Canada thing.

Today's announcement by Doug Ford on the so-called "Fighting Delays, Building Faster" Act is yet another attempt to interfere with Toronto's streets and the way we get around, opening the path for the province to ban dedicated transit lanes.

Ford just put every renter in Ontario into an even more precarious position. This is a clear and present danger to the 1.7 million renters in Ontario.
In particular, they want leases to no longer necessarily remain in effect indefinitely, so that landlords have more options for creating tenant turnover.

Current situation in left-hand column, proposal on the right:

It’s getting increasingly harder to convince anti-vaxxers bc it is no longer about science & evidence. It is about identify & belonging.
It’s not just accepting a vaccine, it’s about leaving behind their sense of self & community. It’s about security. This is why throwing data will never work.

Name a police station after Sewell

(Sewell was voted out after he defended the gays after the bathhouse raids and had been a fairly consistent cop critic)
Interesting. The only two Toronto mayors I can think of that don’t have anything named for them right now are David Miller and John Sewell.

After this, it’d only be Sewell.
Motion on next week’s TTC agenda recommends naming the streetcar storage yard on Leslie Street after former mayor David Miller. Motion highlights Miller’s work on Transit City, St. Clair ROW, ridership growth strategy, new streetcars/subways, etc. secure.toronto.ca/council/agen...

Acetaminophen may not be correlated with negative fetal outcomes, but pre-natal brain-baking from a high maternal fever that would have been reduced with acetaminophen sure is!
Acetaminophen/Tylenol use during pregnancy was not associated with children’s risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability in sibling control analysis. This suggests associations observed in other, less rigorous analyses may have been attributable to familial confounding (aka erroneous finding):
Acetaminophen Use During Pregnancy and Children’s Risk of Autism, ADHD, and Intellectual Disability
This nationwide cohort study with sibling control analysis examines the association of acetaminophen use during pregnancy with children’s risk of autism, ADHD, and intellectual disability.

Vaccines don’t cause autism.
Tylenol (acetaminophen) doesn’t cause autism.
Miniscule trace pesticide residues don’t cause autism.
Aluminum doesn’t cause autism.
Fluoride doesn’t cause autism.

The biggest predictor of autism?
Genetics.

And we recognize autism better today.

They don’t know the lead author, Baccarelli, had the exact claims thrown out of federal court for having ZERO scientific merit,

when he was a paid “expert witness” in lawsuits against Tylenol makers.

This is such a smart column by @shawnmicallef.bsky.social -- I like the metaphor of Toronto as an unruly teen
The Toronto Star’s City Report Card survey suggests six in 10 Torontonians believe that the city’s best days are in the past.

Given the challenges Toronto faces right now, it’s an understandable position, but it’s wrong. My column on teenage Toronto. The future is bright if we….(pls read n share).
