"As democracy is perfected, the office of the president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

This is why this matters to Trump. And why it will be a tragedy when the BBC kowtow.
Nowhere in the hysterical pile-on against the BBC in the British press has anyone mentioned that BBC News now has 77 million viewers & listeners in the US and has established itself as the second most trusted news source there.

Trump won last year because people sensed a vacuum where progressive politics ought to be. That vacuum must be filled or Trump and his personal, idiosyncratic madness is only the beginning of dark days for the whole world.
Democrats were overwhelmingly united on their shutdown demands.

Americans understood that Trump and Republicans were to blame.

Voters made it known last Tuesday that they'll elect leaders who stand up to Trump.

Democrats held the cards — and folded for no reason.

The other fact that people are ignoring is that Prescott is not some random chap plucked out of obscurity to do an 'independent' report. He's part of the campaign from the start.
The fact that the BBC has made serious culpable errors does not negate the point that there is a real and concerted right-wing media campaign to destroy it. Both points can be true at the same time and the campaign would not end even if the errors did.

I’ll add: the “dossier” here was clearly part of a concerted effort to oust the BBC’s top management. Neither the BBC nor the government response acknowledged that. It was slow, ineffective, and outdated.

“Old” media orgs need to learn the new game, or they’ll die out.
Maybe there was an era when apologies helped. Now it’ll just pivot the story to “so you admit you got this wrong, who’s to blame and why haven’t they resigned yet?”

If someone resigns, it’ll be “why didn’t their boss resign too?”, and so on.

The game has changed. Institutions need to catch up.
