From my grandmother’s collection, some heavy pebbles that I suspected were more than they appeared. A glint of metallic luster peaking through a worn edge. Finally had to sacrifice one to make a determination:
Interior is pure galena underneath a heavily oxidized rind.

Years ago when I was studying Vindolanda, I picked up old excavation reports, one at a time. I got every "Archaeologia Aeliana" from 1931-1970 that mentioned Vindolanda digs. The side benefit was learning a *ton* about Hadrian's Wall that isn't circulated widely anymore.

Another throwback -- my reconstructed Qasr B'shir cavalry fort in the Jordanian desert. One of the best-preserved Roman forts anywhere. Yet maddeningly little archaeology has been done there! 🏺 Held about 60 cavalry and their horses, part of the empire's eastern frontier.
