The GOP has Houston in its crosshairs. I abhor Abbott and especially Patrick. I hope we wipe them out of Texas politics in the next election.

“I’ve got $90 million in my bank account, and I’m going to spend most of it in Harris County....We got to win Harris County and make Harris County dark red.”
Greg Abbott vows to spend mightily to turn Harris County red
The county, which includes Houston, is critical to both parties' statewide ambitions, but has been blue for about decade.

Alfred Buckingham was an amazing person. He was a pioneering aerial photographer who walked away from 9 crashes. During shots of the Andes he dealt with the loss of oxygen in a pragmagticly: "...he calmly passed a note to his pilot asking him to thrust back his head back whenever it fell forward. "

This article is about a depressing report that roughly 2/3 of UK writers have lost income income to AI, either through having their work stolen or not getting new work.
More than half of UK novelists believe AI will replace their work
A new study by the University of Cambridge found many authors’ work has already been used – without their permission – to train large language models

@nmamatas.bsky.social If you haven't seen this yet, it's a report out of Cambridge called "The Impact of Generative AI on the Novel" you might find interesting.

"Focus groups, surveys, case studies & a multi-stakeholder policy forum create a rich evidence base...both comprehensive & deeply human."

He is excellent:

"He protested, asserting he was exercising his First Amendment rights, and continued to follow one of the cars while yelling that ICE was in the neighborhood. 'If you’re going to tell me I can’t do it ... I’m going to do it even louder.'"

I generally enjoy The Guardian's critics and their articles, but I just read the lousiest take on One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

This scene had nothing to do with declaring a win despite losing. McMurphy wanted the others to see it's worth trying to do something even if you know you'll fail.

Did you see what movie is coming out for Christmas?

"While the film was broken up into two parts for its original release, this new assembly combines the two versions (with a few tweaks) to fully convey the wild genre mash-up of Tarantino’s original vision."

Incredible video from Reddit (too large to upload the screencap). CBP agents attempt to detain a flower vendor and end up getting chased into a vacant lot by a crowd of teenagers. What a bunch of impotent sad sacks.

I've often thought that the best revenge for all this fashy misery would be affordable social housing, workers rights, a functional health service, sustainable energy and all the other good stuff they apparently hate. But I do keep glancing thoughtfully at lampposts.
With genuine shame, recent years in politics have given me my first taste for what it is to have moralised contempt for my opponents. Not hatred, not fear; contempt. There's some core element of the right wing coalition at the moment which seems to me best described as a revolt of the loser men...

Even Australia's fossils are evil.

"Co-author Prof Michael Archer said 'drop crocs (which could grow to about five metres )' were a 'bizarre idea' but some were 'perhaps hunting like leopards - dropping out of trees on any unsuspecting thing they fancied for dinner'."
Evidence of ancient tree-climbing 'drop crocs' found in Australia
