I've only just today learned Texans had a unique slang term for Union soldiers in the Civil War: Abs, short for abolitionists. "The Abs had got within 300 yards of us" is in a jounal I'm reading and it really threw me for a second.

Seconded. His novels are excellent without the background reading, but it adds another dimension when you look into his references.
Tonight’s post shift reading provided by the ever enlightening* @nmamatas.bsky.social and his most recent work ‘Kalivas! Or, Another Tempest’.

*Enlightening in that every damned piece of his work sends me down a rabbit hole of reading up on weird heresies, forgotten philosophies, or Greek history.

This is extremely offensive and inappropriate. I don’t care how popular it is in bars, dwarf-tossing is degrading and NOT OKAY.

I didn't know that In Living Color is the reason the Super Bowl halftime is such a huge spectacle. In 1992 they aired a special show specifically meant to grab viewers during the Super Bowl's halftime, and they did. The NFL decided no one was going to do that again.

Turning Point USA is plotting its own half-time broadcast in defiance of Bad Bunny – but one of TV’s Blackest shows already perfected the alt-cast in 1992

This must have been a spectacular crash. Houston has no hills - we're flat as a pancake, and somehow this stolen truck slammed into the 2nd story of a building.

My own experience, which is not inconsiderable, allows me to put out Captain Dan's Tear Gas Laundry guidelines.

Specifically, this is for your street clothing that has been exposed to tear gas in smoke/aerosol/dust/particulate form.

This is such an incredible story:

"Once he had swum the 4km (2.49 miles) to shore in fading light, the teenager ran 2km (1.24 miles) to his family’s accommodation, using his mother’s phone to call emergency services at around 6pm."
An ‘amazing feat’: how was 13-year-old Austin Appelbee able to swim for four hours to save his family?
Saltwater, survival backstroke and sheer mind over matter may have helped the teenager save his family, experts say

@fortgeek.bsky.social OK, car question time. Yesterday 2 idiots were driving around downtown in sporty looking little cars. They both gave off v. loud backfires, obviously on purpose, but one had a pre-backfire effect with 3 sounds. These aren't the real notes, but it was like A-C-GGGGGG . 1/2

@katmandu.bsky.social OK, maybe a stupid question but I have a book from '67 about police-community relations & I'm wondering if that's still covered in police training. This book is by a cop & has a chapter on understanding civil disobedience so you can react intelligently, future of policing etc.

Vaguely related to the Leary song is "There ain't but One Way". Yes, this is Hugh Laurie doing a country song and Stephen Fry being Stephen Fry.
