I miss Usenet
I generally enjoy The Guardian's critics and their articles, but I just read the lousiest take on One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

This scene had nothing to do with declaring a win despite losing. McMurphy wanted the others to see it's worth trying to do something even if you know you'll fail.

It looks beautiful, but there's only one way to make this a road trip.

This is beyond horrible. People would travel to Sarajevo and pay to be a sniper so they could shoot civilians like gun range targets. Link to source follows.

It's worse than that. Blinkist is an app that reduces books to a short précis for people too busy to read, and it mentions the actual reading time for each title. This is Musk's #8, which is clearly a profoundly influential book and clocks in at 11 minutes to read:

Trump thinks people like himself - overweight, weak, unhealthy - don't deserve to visit the US. If he weren't a hypocrite, he'd self-deport. Link to source follows.

I once got a $400 light bill when it should've been ~110. They said my dog was loose, so the meter reader couldn't get the actual number & they averaged my neighbors' bills. I don't have a dog, so after I went to investigate, I got to call back and tell them their guy was afraid of spiders.

Retired brothers who worked as weapons sabateurs for the CIA use their skills & knowledge to create a massive Halloween display every year. (link follows)

"The displays [are] made by the Parks out of raw materials or discarded electronic devices, rescued parts, or remnants of some CIA experiments."

Just to share it, I was remembering a thread from 2018 Twitter. The ALT text on the screen cap has the whole thread's text. His point was about arming teachers, but giving poorly trained rookie cops guns can't be any safer.

"It is a truth universally acknowledged..." is one of the most famous opening lines in English, is clearly tongue-in-cheek and is used to immediately display Mrs. Bennet's personality, and this guy has this to say about it:

Tim Curry has just published a memoir - Vagabond. The Guardian has an interview with him (link follows), and this bit about his mother stands out:

I've got to start saving for some big projects so I allowed myself one last retail splurge before I go back to only used books again. I got my order this weekend, and this is part of it:

I only just saw this (notifications don't seem to be working well lately). The growth on her arm is disgusting, but what's with that flap on her leg?

LAPD raided a diagnostic center claiming it was a grow house due to blacked out windows (patient privacy) and high electrical usage. The electricy powered the MRI, which they didn't know about before the raid.

In "Basket Case" Carl Hiaasen has a singer who became a media darling when people saw her pubic hairs during a music video. Good luck, guy.

I was reading an artcile about people getting into trouble asking AI for vacation help because it makes up fake places, or forgets to mention a 4K change in elevation, so I asked one to plan a trip to see the lakes of Houston, and the top 2 offerings were:

This is a just released finding of fact in the case of a student being detained for pro-Palestinian speech. 161 pages is barely enough to contain the judge's anger, but he really outdoes himself on pg. 98, when talking about masked ICE agents.
