Just three months from today, my book about Americans’ 250 year struggle over slavery’s place in George Washington’s legacy will be out in the world. Some great (and NYT bestselling!) writers have said kind things about it. I hope you’ll consider pre-ordering a copy. bookshop.org/p/books/thy-...
For my book, I spent a LOT of time researching how Americans have talked about George Washington and slavery on his birthday (more to come on that front). But that also meant I encountered great examples of using Washington's birthday/Presidents Day as a stupid commercial opportunity. (from 1929)

I remember talking with someone who planned a lot of Capitol Hill events and they explained it was always insecure, junior members of Congress who insisted on big security details and the like, while more senior people just showed up.
interesting that these people — and fellow travelers like bari weiss — insist on large, expensive security details. they are status markers, i suppose.
“.. using millions of dollars from the former U.S. foreign aid agency to pay for the security detail of Russell Vought ..”

When you've even got Bucks County and Delco joining an amicus brief to oppose your efforts to erase the history of slavery, you know you've fucked up. whyy.org/articles/phi...
Philly suburbs seek to assist lawsuit over slavery exhibit removal
“Our history is imperfect,” said Delco Council Chair Richard Womack, “but it is ours, and the federal government can’t rewrite it or ignore it the moment they find it inconvenient.”

This week, the legislatures of Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wisconsin (and probably more) have all introduced bills commending Taiwan and talking about strengthening ties. What am I missing here?

I get to teach a dozen pre-schoolers about George Washington today. Apparently my son has been hyping up my book to his classmates, brought it for show and tell. It's a lot of pressure!
