the best marketing advice i have for indie/self-published authors who are poor and can't afford to pay for any sort of advertisements...

learn how to shit post about your own book in a way that inspires people to be curious and take a closer look :)

I had someone tell me they liked a book of mine but they rated it lower on Goodreads because "the marketing said it was horror and it wasn't." When I asked them what marketing --because it was never marketed as horror-- they said "Goodreads tags." Which are user generated.
I fought in the 2015 reddit wars to get male readers to see female writers as more than only romance and childrens authors, only to arrive on the doorstep of 2025 where female readers assume all female writers only write romance and send unhinged emails about no HEA in non-romance genre book 💀

I will always advocate for self identifying things such as autism and ADHD because seeking a diagnosis is far too inaccessible for many reasons to include a lack of understanding in the medical field as well as even being able to afford getting assessed

There’s a book that I really want. It would really help with my final paper, but I could not get access to it bcs our library has not purchased it.

Also: If you don't have money to buy my (or anyone's) books, and you live in the anglosphere, before you pirate them, try to get them from your local library instead. They have it or can get it, they pay for the books, and in many places writers get paid for their books being lent. Everyone wins!

Today, I treat banned books just like I used to with the magazines in the drug store when I was a kid; the ones that had a black plastic covering over the outside and were placed on the back row.

I suspected there was something inside that I wanted to see, and...most of the time...I was right.

Spotify's entry into the audiobook market last year - and particularly its offering of 15 hours of 'free' audiobooks monthly - is slowly having wider repercussions: Amazon/Audible has waited, watched, and is now essentially mimicking Spotify's approach.

Amazon Music Unlimited to offer monthly access to Audible’s catalogue of 800k audiobooks
Amazon Music Unlimited customers in the UK, US and Canada can now listen to one audiobook a month from sister company Audible’s library, in a move that seems designed to ward off competition from Spot...

how do I show this to folks in leadership without having to talk to them
Pro tip to those in leadership: If someone comes asking for you to do more to protect/help themselves, their kids, vulnerable or marginalized residents, don’t tell them what you’ve already done, just listen to what they’re asking for.

If I have to write a summary of a talk I have to listen on youtube, I don’t have a choice but to transcribe closely verbatim

before my brain could start making sense what’s the talk is all about #neurodivergent #study

My parents may not have answers to my endless questions but one thing they always do is bring me to book store and never denied buying me books

And that has made me love learning more
Did your parents control what you read as a child/teen? Mine did not, and my life was not ruined. I grew up to be an academic librarian.
