I read a book on making money in ancient Athens recently (by Michael Leese, it's great), and the Greeks absolutely believed that the endless pursuit of wealth was a serious moral defect and personality issue no different than being a drunk or sexual deviant.
If you make a billion dollars — or $500 million or even $100 million dollars — and you keep trying to make more, then there is something seriously wrong with you. It's a mental illness akin to hoarding or drug addiction.

I've lived in the suburbs for about five years now and I'm increasingly convinced that it's the most culturally pathological category of American life - full of addiction issues, white-collar crime, and above all, mediocrity masquerading as accomplishment and virtue. That last part is what I hate.

Thinking about this Deleuze meme as I measure my support for Graham Platner. I still think he the correct choice, because of what he can do - not because of his identity

NEW: Graham Platner Soldiers On

From my vantage on the ground here in Maine, rumors of Platner's demise have been greatly exaggerated. I've seen many campaigns implode in my 15 years covering national politics — none looked like this. www.midcoastvillager.com/news/politic...

If you live in Maine, and even if you don’t, this was legitimately rousing.

Graham Platner feels like someone who actually gives a shit. (He was born in my town, so new to a Wikipedia page they’re sure what year yet, lol.) We have mutuals. Everybody vouches.

#SciArtSeptember 1: Islet

Somewhere in the waves of Barents Sea, a rocky islet acts as a perch for seabirds. Puffins, guillemots, razorbills and skuas are still here, though threatened by heating oceans and spreading disease. With them sits a lonely ghost of a great auk that once roamed these seas.
