Publication day! This was one of the hardest stories I’ve ever translated, both for the language and content. It’s also one of the most important stories I’ve translated. I hope as many people as possible will read it and reflect on the reality of war.

Nice little mix of Asian literature reads this month. Highly recommend A Man but they are all worthy books of one's time

#booksky people! Finished Hirano's A Man. Part reflection on identity, loss and death, marriage and justice in society driven by a slowly unspooled heartfelt mystery. The best meditation on Korean identity in Japan (outside of Pachinko). Highly recommend.

A fantastic review of Sayaka Murata’s Vanishing World by Madeleine Feeny in the New York Times, in which she likens it to “The Handmaid’s Tale on acid” - totally made my day!
Book Review: ‘Vanishing World,’ by Sayaka Murata (Gift Article)
Sayaka Murata’s novel “Vanishing World” envisions an alternate universe where artificial insemination is the global norm, and sex takes a back seat.

My review of the anthology Unusual Fragments
