HHS is trying to force Seattle Children's into doing a Sophie's choice of abandoning trans youth or see kids with cancer or other serious illness have their coverage and care disrupted. That's what this is about.

Hopefully, the courts put a quick stop to this like the subpoenas.

I know people are rightly going to be worried about child health, their own health. But we also can't afford this. Like, John Hopkins did an estimate (next link) and every measles case during outbreaks cost on average $43,000 to treat. That kid who got tetanus cost $1 million dollars to treat /1

i hate that AI is such a buzzword these days because it's all linear algebra soup and sometimes the soup is actually extremely good. GFS's reduced accuracy in previous events (hurricane sandy, notably) from computational limitations has cost lives. 99.7% reduction with comparable accuracy is insane.

apropos of nothing, you should read about and fully digest Executive Order 9066 and perform a little thought experiment about what you’d have been willing to do if you were alive in an era where an entire group of immigrants were unilaterally imprisoned for nothing more than their country of origin

Unbelievable. This would be a terrible blow to American science, writ large. It would decimate not only climate research, but also the kind of weather, wildfire, and disaster research that has underpinned half a century of progress in prediction, early warning, and increased resilience.
Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

To give you a sense of how big a departure this year, the government doesn't do this for wanted criminals.
SCOOP: The Trump administration is providing the names of all travelers passing through U.S. airports to immigration officials in search of people with deportation orders, a substantial expansion of government efforts to draw on data to hunt down immigrants.

This should be the biggest story in the country right now. The sitting US President was extorting state lawmakers from his own party by threatening to withhold public money if they didn’t gerrymander for him.

I don’t know how else to say it…

I think it's sometimes remembered as a noble thing Republicans did when they told Nixon to quit or get impeached, but his popularity had already plummeted and he wasn't good for the party nationally. Republican defections were as much about getting rid of an albatross from around their neck.
BREAKING: Indiana Republicans FAILED to pass a new 9-0 congressional gerrymander after enough GOP senators sided with Dems. The GOP's 7-2 map stays in place.

Trump is trying to re-gerrymander maps nationwide. At least 11 Indiana Rs got death threats after he called for primaries—but it still failed

The Imperial Presidency is such a good book and talks about this exact scenario. What good is Congress' power to declare war if the President has the unchecked power to *make* war?
As Trump drags us into an Iraq-style war in Venezuela, 312 members of the House — including 115 Democrats — just voted to authorize over $900 billion in military spending.

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.
