#OTD in 1941, not long after the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Marine base on Sand Island (Midway) came under bombardment from two IJN destroyers. In the attack, 4 Marines were killed and two were wounded. Marine shore batteries drove off the attackers.
