🚨New Video Game Voice Reel🚨
I love video games, with all their quirks and idiosyncrasies. And there’s nothing more uniquely video gamey than the audio log. To that end, I’ve written and performed a brand new reel highlighting this conceit, and I genuinely think it’s really fun. I hope you enjoy.

New article: one thing from every inkle game that we failed to explain clearly enough, and how often we've been made to regret it.
You can’t underestimate everyone
Here is a quick list of features in inkle games which we failed to tutorialise or remind players of enough. The data is empirically backed…

I just learned that a GDC Festival Pass (which AFAICT gives access to everything except the GDC Vault and a bunch of luxe bonuses) is $349 for students, staff, and faculty—it's normally $649! You need an academic email address and will have to show ID on site. A big deal for game programs, I think!

This isn’t a “I’m so great” post so much as it is a “the artistic process is great” post, and collaboration with real people is invigorating and exciting, and the creation of something NEW is always going to be more surprising and fun than the regurgitation of something old. Surprise yourself.

And, having now played an early copy of that game, I think it’s some of the best work I’ve ever done. It’s dark and gruff and nasty, but still incorporates my tendency for lightness and humour. I’ve surprised myself and my director. And hopefully the audience, too.

And I think about this a lot. I recently did a video game with an old friend who’d always thought of me as a particular sort of actor - that’s fine, I’ve a light RP voice and I have a natural inclination towards humour and silliness - but one day decided to cast me as something altogether darker.

Years ago, I was at an event with Sir Ian McKellen and asked him what the best piece of direction he’d ever received was. He pointed to his prod. of Lear and said it was “Everybody knows this play already. Your goal to surprise yourself. That way, at least one person in the room will be surprised.”
If your game has voice acting, then working with the voice actors is half of your writing process. It's not complete until you've heard it interpreted and reimagined by a voice actor. And they always reimagine it in ways that elevate the writing, in ways you never would have imagined yourself.
