As I get older, the more I come to terms with the fact that no male in my line has lived a drastically long life and that the next year may be my last.

So here's to 2026. May it be a fire that burns forever.

Frankly there hasn't been a better market for them to enter into the physical space like this. Xbox is exiting the console game and people on PC already have massive libraries in which to pull from. If the price point is good, the steam machine in particular could be a game changer for couch gaming
The Steam Machine will live or die on its pricing, I think, but it's hard not to be bullish. SteamOS is fantastic and the Steam Deck has been my most-used gaming machine since it came out nearly four years ago

Great little thread here. People use LLM's like they are calculators when they are explicitly NOT. They can be right, but that's more of a fluke of statistics than any indication of rational thought.

It's such an easy concept to grasp and yet people just outright refuse to learn it
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

reading slaughterhouse 5 for the first time and i was absolutely knocked senseless by this passage, which is so true and relevant that it feels like it was pulled from a history book

Absolutely, but that's hardly the point.

I can live with a dude who made mistakes when he was younger and is trying to be better. That would also include that he goes back to a tattoo shop and gets that shit covered up.
Honest question, asked without judgment: did you know what the tokenkopf was before today?

Brainwashing is a great excuse to absolve guilt over lots of shit. The fact is is that there are so many people are just dumb and too proud to admit that. It's okay! You can be dumb!

Remember, all those dumb people you knew from HS didn't go anywhere. They just got old and voted.
the other thing i’ll say here is i am a bit frustrated with the narrative of online radicalization that treats it as akin to brainwashing. it lets individuals, families and communities off the hook for the choices they make and the environments they foster
this also drives me insane, this idea that it is the most normal thing in the world for a young (white) man to have a nazi curious phase. it isn’t!

Meanwhile, down the street from me, a train station restoration has taken two years and still isn't done. I drive past the construction everyday and just wonder "Man, it's still going to take me two hours to get to the city huh?"
“Critics worry China trapped in vicious cycle of building out amazing and useful infrastructure such as hydropower dam"
For critics, China’s construction of the world’s largest dam is another sign of Beijing’s inability to break from its tried-and-true formula of turning to infrastructure investment to stimulate the economy.

I wrote a 20 page paper on French Descort poetry and it's influence on music of the medieval / early-renaissance period despite not knowing French because I was really high and found a cool book in the library at 10PM with the paper due at 8AM the next day.

ChatGPT could never accomplish this.
I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

This is a great list, of which I have no disagreements, but would like to add Tom Waits to it.

The dude is a storyteller and his lyrics are the canvas upon which he crafts these stories. He can make you feel like a party animal or a heart-broken mess all within the same track.

Watching my country fall apart is super fun and all, but I could use a break man. I work hard. Give me something to like laugh at, like that dude who threw a shoe at Bush. That was fun! He didn't even get hit, we just had a good laugh about it.

claims like this are wild, but it doesn't share the whole truth. People read for fun all the time. Chances are you are reading this right now!

i think the biggest contributor to this is two fold:

In the same vein, learn to let shit go. There are very few things that are permanent in the world and, barring some really consequential shit like medical problems, you're going to be fine. Time isn't a great healer but it does put distance between you and whatever else is going on.
Don't hold grudges

Not for anyone else's sake but your own, they'll poison you
Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?
