A reason I get so angry when people diminish stochastic terrorism's role in shaping our society is because when things like the campaign of terrorism & subsequent hate killing of Jonathan Joss happen we all instinctively acknowledge that it may not have were the perpetrators not emboldened.

Every time I think I'm overreacting and it actually would be ok to go to a couple of conferences, something comes into my social media to remind me I am not.
A legal resident of New Hampshire was “violently interrogated” for hours, stripped naked, and forced into a cold shower. Given little food or water and prevented from taking medication, he collapsed and was hospitalized.
No One Is Safe From America’s Abusive Immigration Authorities Anymore

Where are people getting this message, like, fascism aside, where are Leaders getting this message that Empathy and Humanity are qualities that are undesirable, weak and fundamentally useless? These are the foundations of collective society. Nothing sustainable can exist without it. I don't get it.

That mentality - that capitalism is somehow a game which everyone signs up to at birth, and the winners deserve the world - explains so much about the current moment.
Thinking today of the guy at law school who everyone said was the loveliest man you could imagine, and when we finally hung out the most memorable thing that he said was “the super-rich have earned the right to pay no tax”.
