This is the United States Government, y’all.

It’s already a Christian theocracy.

Not covertly. Not “in the process of.”

Now.

It is a theocracy.

Now let’s talk about some of the stakes:

Remember when the Dem consultant class was saying not to make a big deal about immigration and instead prioritize abandoning trans people?

Turns out leading on a policy issue can change public opinion on that issue 😱
This is remarkable. New Quinnipiac poll finds support for path to legalization for most undocumented immigrants has risen to 64%. Only 31% want most of them deported.

That's a 14 point net swing for legalization since Trump took office.

On immigration generally, he's at 41-57!

Democratic party: we must spend billions to find out what the people want.

The people: (loudly and clearly, through the very process the Democratic Party set up) We want this.

The defense of Rowling accidentally reveals that trans women are used as scapegoats for the violence of cis men. And like, I haven't read Whipping Girl, but I think a lot of us have had the realization that trannies are the sin-eaters of contemporary society.

Behind the ruling: how ‘Sex Matters’ is shaping UK policy on trans rights
The UK Supreme Court ruling redefined ‘sex’ – but for trans people, it’s the start of something far more sweeping and exclusionary

Hey people, it’s not funny to say that Christian fundamentalist radicals taking over the government are Sharia law.

We don’t need to engage in bigoted speech against our Muslim neighbors because the radical Christians are taking away our rights.

They’re realizing they’ve lost the public entirely. They may have never been kingmakers, but if they can’t even stop a mayor now, what happens when they need to crush another Bernie? They’re out of goodwill and they’re out of power and they know it and that’s what scares them most of all

It's kinda tough to come to terms with the idea that journalism as a profession is institutionally transphobic, but in what should have been a huge scandal, leaked listserv logs showed journalists coordinating behind the scenes to prevent trans people being hired

It's an easy cop-out to think trans people are responsible for our own oppression, because if that was the case, it's something we could have control over and remedy. It's a lot harder to reckon with the reality that a coalition of right wing groups are spending extraordinary money opposing us.
The idea that pro-trans movements led to anti-trans sentiment is egregiously out of touch with reality. Increased LGBTQ representation led to historic shifts in public opinion toward the community. The aggressively bigoted and violent campaigns that lied about trans people are clearly responsible

That's what makes respectability politics sinister: when marginalized groups are put into a situation by external forces, those same external forces will try to convince the marginalized that *only* if they behaved "properly," they'd be accepted. Except, even if done, the marginalization remains.

sorry to cut in on this, but this thread's got us thinking--this post is absolutely correct, make no mistake. the thought "transphobes forget trans men exist" is undeniably false, Ms. Emma (predictably) has got it on one.

we *have,* however, noticed another phenomenon we'd like to discuss. 🧵

-M
The fact that the figure of the trans man doesn't become the focal point of anti-trans furor is part of the method--he is not trans, he cannot become trans, he can only be a 'mutilated girl.' To pronounce a trans man trans is to admit that FtM transition works

When a disabled person shares a story of medical trauma, they're told to 'just lodge a complaint'

People don't understand how broken the complaint process is, or the risk of retaliation facing those of us who speak out

Once you're labelled 'difficult' or 'non compliant' it's very hard to get care:
Why Don't You "Just" Lodge a Complaint?
When a disabled person is mistreated in healthcare, they're told to 'just' complain. It's not that simple. There's a culture of retaliation in the medical field that makes complaining very hard to do.
