I feel bad that Matt Walsh, the awesome comic actor from the Upright Citizens' Brigade, has to share a namesake with some joyless retrograde asshole who's likely from Innsmouth and slowly turning into an inbred man-fish.

Y'know what? Good! She shouldn't have a career, for being such a miserable See-You-Next-Tuesday...

(The best thing to happen to Disco Elysium was replacing her and those Chapo Trap House fucks as the voice cast. Like we need more reactionaries in a revolutionary's clothing, which we don't...)

(No, seriously, that *is* a plot point in that book. Well, that and incestuous twin siblings - one of whom takes a drug that alters reality. It's a weird book, and that's saying *a lot* given the author.)

This is literally from George Lucas' THX-1138, and social commentary about religion being an opiate of the masses.

Nice going, Techbros - another Torment Nexus from sci-fi you clearly didn't get the point of!

I've brought this up elsewhere, but I do think it's a symptom of how social media conditions us to hyper-focus on the negative to the remiss of *any* positivity. It's why there're cottage industries built around baiting outrage from fandoms as well as self-victimizing about being "cancelled."

Novak himself would do this introduction describing what inspired the episode and, in this case, it was the observation of how certain online personalities - despite being surrounded by those singing praises - would end up having a meltdown over *one* person being critical of them.

There was this *criminally* short-lived anthology series by B.J. Novak called "The Premise," and one episode features an influencer who loses their mind over a *single* person trolling them, even as everyone around them says just to ignore the person and be happy to have so many supporters.

This reminds me of movies, especially from the MCU, which're already comedic in tone but nonetheless have characters who also function as *comic relief*.

It's putting a hat on a hat, which is bad enough, but it's even worse when using comic relief in a type of story which *shouldn't* have them.

It's easy to romanticize the United States in the 1950s...*if* you ignore how black individuals were basically second-class citizens, women were a combination of housemaid and breeding sow, and being gay was seen as a mental illness.

Unless, of course, you *like* those things - as a fascist would.

If you took nostalgia to its logical extreme, you could just as easily argue that the world was better not only fifty years ago but a hundred - even a thousand or more - yet nostalgia, like rose-colored shades, just makes it difficult to recognize all the red flags. But they *are* there regardless.

Nostalgia isn't a disease in the sense that it's something you can catch from bacteria, but it *is* a disease in a sense that it's a memetic concept that causes and enables a delusion that the past was, somehow, "objectively" (a word people like to throw around recklessly) better than it is now.
