Hi there, I'm a voice actor who has worked in several games including making an appearance in Genshin as some NPCs. A lot of the information in this thread is based on conjecture or is completely wrong. Studios, Agencies, and Flipping, Oh My! First off, just to be clear on wording and not to be too much of a nerd, it would be a recording studio that handled the casting and recording of characters for a game; an agency is a separate thing that represents actors and their best interests. The studio sends out an audition to my agent and my agent gives me the ones they think I'd be a good fit for. The recording studio does not handle whether or not a game is or is not union; this explicitly rests with the client which in this example would be Hoyoverse. A recording studio can no more flip a project union than I could throw a stone and hit the moon. "SAG-AFTRA has banned all union voice actors from acting in Hoyo games (effectively forever) if the Hoyo games remain non-union." This is a distortion of the truth: if you are a SAG member actor you are bound by what is called Global Rule One, where you are not allowed to work projects not protected by SAG. This has been the case long before Hoyoverse games came along, and will be the case long after they are gone. Union actors who work non-union projects are what's called "working off the card" and can be punished by SAG for doing so. However, you can resign from SAG to become what is called Financial Core, or Fi-Core, where you pay union fees but are allowed to work non-union projects. The vast majority of voice work is non-union, as well as any projects that record in the UK (where I live and work), so a great many voice actors are Fi-Core and as such were able to work non-union games. TL;DR: union actors never weren't banned; that has never once been a point of contention. "If the Hoyo games become unionized or sign the Independent Interactive Localization Agreement, Hoyo has to remove all EN VAs who are currently non-union, or all these non-union VAs will have to join SAG-AFTRA." This isn't true either. If the game flipped union, then all non-union actors would both stay on it and given the option to join the union. Non-union actors can work on union projects by a form called a Taft-Hartley, which allows them in (think of it as a visitor pass). Actors that live in what's called 'right-to-work states' like Texas, or are based outside the US, don't even need to do that and can just work union jobs regardless. Working a union project makes you elegible to join SAG, but the joining fee and annual fees you mention (which are called dues and are paid by all members of all unions) only apply if they choose to, well, join. The dues help fund the operation of the union and help afford it its ability to protect actors. TL;DR: NU actors are not at risk from a project flipping union. Hoyo games (and recording studios) are not the target of the SAG-AFTRA strike. In a legal sense, they are collateral damage from the strike. Also unfortunately wrong. The strike aims to secure fair working conditions for all actors working on video games, and while union projects are the main target, non-union titles like Genshin and Zenless are not collateral but are also combatants. It was outlined at the beginning of the strike that non-union projects can be worked, but performers can withhold work in solidarity with their union peers and fight for proper enforceable protections (that is to say, protections that SAG's lawyers outlined and will fight your case on in court). This is what actors who are silent in a lot of these games were doing. They knew the risks of being recast, but chose to stand up for what is right in the hopes that AI protections were assured. TL;DR: Non-union projects have work withheld in solidarity.

If you're wondering why so many actors aren't working on Sssside Letter Sssix games (i.e. "This was authorized on an IMA contract pre-strike, but hasn't signed an Interim") despite "technically" being allowed…

It's because SL6 games have no protection against companies feeding people to the robots.
