My previous assumption was that Italy definitely wouldn’t qualify, however now that the groups are drawn, it would be almost as humiliating for them to qualify and then be eliminated by that group so maybe that will happen

I would reframe this less about a changing of the guard but as toxic runoff. It used to be that the Establishment read the WSJ and the vase listened to Talk Radio. But then the slop got into the elite channels and it broke everyone's brains because it turns out they are not immune to propaganda!
I buy the Cabaret theory of modern politics: current right wing politics was, once upon a time, a thing elites sold to rubes while merely pretending to believe themselves while they pursued wealth, but now the True Believers are actually in charge and acting on sincerely believed insane nonsense.

It's genuinely wild that the actual pitch for the DSA (from DSA members!) is "The DSA is a garbage org that's overrun by cranks & wreckers, & you should join so *maybe* we fix that."
