I think a huge part of my Mom's activism when I was a kid was focused on the idea that other families wouldn't have to go through what we did to get support, but everything I see suggests childhood disability supports are worse now.

When I interned at a trade union in the states (in the year of still had a flip phone) I went into the GC's office because after looking everywhere I couldn't find the maternity leave legislation, just a family medical leave act that couldn't be the only one...
A couple weeks ago a friend was telling me about someone she knew who had been on maternity leave, and said she had taken "the full year." I said, "A whole year? Wow, what kind of fancy job does she have that gives her a YEAR of leave?" and my friend looked surprised & said, "... welcome to Canada?"

Today, 144 years ago, 1600 Crown troops invaded a pacifist settlement that was the centre of resistance against British colonialism. The leaders were arrested, the settlement sacked, the people violated.

For many in Aotearoa, November 5th is Parihaka Day, or Te Rā o te Pāhua: The Day of Plunder.

Tomorrow is the Fifth of November – but let’s forget Guy Fawkes and his actions against an arrogant Protestant king and instead look to our own history: the unlawful attack on Parihaka and, by extension, Māori sovereignty.

Today is 10 years since the Northen Irish Assembly voted in favour of marriage equality. A landmark day, but it was another 5 years before it became a reality due to the abuse of the petition of concern.

Their Facebook page says that the Taoiseach’s officials promised them a mediation meeting on Monday. It has now been postponed to Wednesday. They have now been on hunger strike for over 40 days. This is an appalling way to treat people.
'We are not afraid to die': Industrial school survivors vow to continue 32-day hunger strike

Four are refusing to eat over two demands they say were promised but have not been delivered as part of the industrial schools' redress scheme — a Health Amendment Act card and a contributory pension

Maybe you think that some people are applying for international protection cynically or dishonestly. So... would making it easier for someone to just come here and work fix that? Of course it would.

Oh, but you don't want to do that either?

Well, now who doesn't want to talk about immigration.

My wife has apparently been telling her peads patients "well your [insert siblings here] is probably better at this than you" to get them to enthusiastically participate in the anaesthesia process.

I am now rethinking every interaction I've ever had with this master manipulator.

A lot of the men in my family have the same name and half of them work in the same place which means I just had to describe myself as "Blondie's daughter" on the phone.

The man hasn't been blonde since 1964.

Can you imagine TDs scrambling to change the Constitution or commentators hand-wringing in the media if it was leftists who behaved the way the spoiled vote crew did, in the same (minority) numbers, after several bigoted riots. Not so much forced to pander to them as willingly taking a running leap.

And while I think of it, we looked at every single spoiled vote for Galway West that day, a lot were just badly filled out, some were clear spoils, but the reason why was not clear or consistent. You can't ascribe spoils to a particular point of view.
Once upon a time I had to spend a half hour looking over spoiled votes (for #MarRef) with Catherine Connolly.

Part of the reason that FF/FG are a bit hopeless in presidential campaigns is because it relies on having a positive vision for the future of Ireland, not just fear and a strong constituency game. #Áras25

I didn't get to vote today. Not news, but I didn't lose my vote on the president of Ireland when I moved to New Zealand, I lost it when I moved to Belfast.

It is so beyond time to extend the vote on the President to the whole island.

It would have been a really good time, for the world, to show that soldiers like David Cleary could face justice for massacring civilians as though they had impunity.

As Barney's body lay out in the street in a pool of blood, the Derry Civil Rights Association banner held by marchers that day was used to cover him.

Damien O'Kane's father (@mckanedj on Twitter) kept it and donated to the Museum of Free Derry, where it is now on permanent display.
