- Discredited PFI to return for funding NHS projects
- Trial by jury to be axed except for most serious cases

That’s just today

BREAKING: This is huge news, the EU's equivalent of the 🇺🇸Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling.

🇪🇺Court of Justice just ruled all 🇪🇺countries must recognise same-sex marriages granted in other member states.

This effectively legalises gay marriage across 🇪🇺

I was once sceptical about the value of juries but I've learned through the trans work how shabbily our institutions treat those without privilege and fear their passing.

Like the Supreme Court's judicial roll back of human rights, this change to our justice system will hit the weakest hardest.

So the actual bar being discussed for juryless trials seems to be anything where the sentence is less than 5 years.

Anything less than 5 years would not require a jury and could be decided by a judge in a closed room.

Worth noting that 3 years is the top number for activists generally...

No right to privacy
No right to protest
No right to jury trial
No real transfer of power when a supposedly different party is elected

Does anyone recognise what this is yet?

Perhaps naive and nostalgic of me but – was there not a point in the last decade or so when one would have expected (at least within the legal profession and the judiciary) – a far bolder defence of the rule of law?

In the span of a hour, they stealth edited the article from trans woman to "biological male who identifies as a woman." The BBC isn't fit for purpose.
It looks like that BBC page has been updated in the last few minutes, so that's no longer the last sentence. I think part of it has been moved to this paragraph in the middle of the article, and the age is no longer mentioned:
