I wonder what the drivers of health care costs are. It certainly seems like healthcare was more affordable prior to the advent of private insurance, when people had to pay in cash at the time of service. But at the same time, obvs. insurance *has* helped edge cases that wouldn't otherwise get care.

Wishful thinking.

Dictators exist because they have a military that they're willing to use ruthlessly against the people, and whose loyalty the assure through preferential treatment.

We're not there *YET*. But we're getting perilously close.
Dictators exist because the people don’t realize their power…and because the dictator works relentlessly…to make sure they never realize it.

We…realize our power in this country.

We have finally managed to trap the two barn cats and have them inside--segregated from the other cats--just ahead of the single-digit cold front. So that's good. Hansel was fairly easy to get inside, and he's not really feral. Gretel... Required a live-catch trap.

Light snow in Presque Isle. Heavy snow and roads covered in fresh snow in Mars Hill. Minimal snow in Houlton.

Weird weather pattern; there was only snow in a 10 mile wide band, and both north and south of it were clear.

Last night at the range, I saw a guy trying to show his girlfriend (?) how to shoot with a Baretta model 92. It was really, really hard not to jump in, because he was teaching her to use a teacup grip.

Made it to the range for the first time in... Months. I worked on hammer pairs, bill drills, and just remembering recoil. I'm pushing a little left; I need to adjust my finger position in dry fire. Double action shots need work.

Still love my CZ Shadow 2 Compact. 🥰

@npr.org and had a story on the radio on 25 November about insurance costs. The person being interviewed said prices haven't gone up because of *insurance companyprofits*, but because doctors and hospitals are "charging more".

www.npr.org/2025/11/25/n...
Why is U.S. health insurance so expensive?
Sure, insurance companies are part of the reason your premium went up this year -- but so are hospitals and doctors.

We started watching The X-Files last night. And, aside from Gillian Anderson and David Duchoveny looking like children, the most surprising thing is how *naïve* it feels. After five years--so far--of Trump, the deep gov't conspiracies feel so *innocent*.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm fairly certain that giving someone immunity for the substance of their testimony means that they can no longer assert 5A rights. Which would make it a fantastic way to compel testimony.
Interesting. Ghislaine Maxwell's lawyers says she will plead the fifth if forced to testify to Congress. But she willingly sat down with Todd Blanche? What a load of horseshit. www.politico.com/live-updates...

IF sex work is work, and the labourer deserves to be fairly paid for their labour

AND there is nothing inherently shameful about being a sex worker

THEN there is nothing inherently wrong or shameful with someone hiring or paying for a sex worker.

(Is sex work often exploitative? Yes, absolutely.

I... Guess it depends, right? The exchange right now is about 1:1.41 USD to CAD, 1:1.31 GBP to USD, and 1:1.15 EU to USD. But you'd have to check the exchanges for the exact rate?
i’m taking my husband to lunch today. Hope he know what the exchange is.

I've done this. I did it with Marduk & Rotting Christ in Chicago. I wanted to see them, and then the day of the show, it felt like just too much. Maybe it was because I was feeling very alone at the time, maybe because I was afraid I'd run into my ex- there, IDK.

But the bands got $$$, so 👍
live music and i have such a weird relationship right now.

i felt i had to buy tickets to this Wednesday show, have been dying to see this band live.

and here i am, not wanting to go.

is it the season? is it pre-show anxiety? both? idk, but i hate it.

The barn cats have shown up again! Hansel und Gretel--obviously a bonded pair--have come back. Hansel disappeared before the snowstorm, and Gretel disappeared from the woodshed (where we have a heated cat tent & feed them) two days ago.

But they're back!

We need to get them both inside ASAP .

Mass surveillance programs all need to be disbanded, defunded, and their authors blackballed. All ALPRs need to be banned from use, as does any automated surveillance tech.

It is impossible to allow *any* use at all without it being misused.

I got my grandma's bread recipe from my dad, because it always had such a unique flavour and texture. It turns out that she was using a combination of hard red winter wheat and softer summer wheat.

That's not the kind of recipe that I've seen online.

... And I still can't find the right flour.
Sometimes I forget just how old my mom is and then she asks for my address so she can send me a cookbook like I can’t look up any recipe in a matter of seconds online.

I agree in spirit.

And yet.

I will vote for a candidate that is the *least bad* option over holding out for my version of perfect. My votes are for triage.
we have got to destroy ICE and salt the earth

I will not vote for any federal candidate who doesn’t vow to abolish ICE

I will not vote for any state or local candidate who doesn’t agree to fight ICE

I'm not dying to have negotions with health insurance companies.

I want health insurance company CEO's dying to negotiate with ME.

Every insurance co. exec deserves the same fate as Brian Thompson, no exceptions. #FreeLuigi #LuigiDidNothingWrong
This GOP notion that people are dying to have one on one negotiations with their health insurance companies is so tone deaf it sounds like a democratic proposal

As I was walking up my driveway through the snow, I could see eyeshine at the edge of my head lamp's throw. It's a bit eerie to see five pairs of eyes, starting at you in the dark of night.

Then they ran; I startled a herd of deer.

This is why I moved to the far north

Look, guys, don't do this. If you want people to change, don't insist that they change everything all at once, and treat them contemptuously when they don't.

@adamkinzinger.substack.com, you should know this. When you broke with Republicans, did you instantly change *all* of your opinions?
Again before we go praising MTG… and if shes truly changed great, but can somebody please ask her about January 6? Have her address that to see if this is real

They don't have to open one thousand investigations; they only have to open enough to cover for Trump and the people that are still in his good graces.
Massie: "There are a thousand survivors. They can't open enough investigations to cover up everything that's in these files."
November 18, 2025 at 11:14 PM
I have no doubt that the files released will NOT be complete due to "ongoing investigations", or because some documents will be classified.

...Or because many have simply been destroyed.
Today, the House finally passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Survivors have waited years for answers, and the American people have been kept in the dark for far too long.

Every name, every meeting, and every document must be released—no excuses, no delays.

(1/2)
November 18, 2025 at 10:36 PM
Okay, but will the bill being voted on also declassify everything and force a release of documents being used in "ongoing investigations"? Because if not, there's a 100% certainty that a LOT will be withheld.
The House will vote today to release the Jeffrey Epstein files.

This is not a hoax.
