This is exactly how this works. It was the same with Corbyn/antisemitism… and everything rly. Editors decide what’s ‘news’. This is so effective because 90+% of people either assume this process is either ‘objective’, has no agenda, or don’t even question it at all.

There was technical graphics teacher in our school who it was rumoured had been on a game show and that he had lost out by answering “Dennis Thatcher” to some question. This led to people yelling “BEEEEPPPP Dennis Thatcher” at him and it made him so mad he used to smash T-squares over his desk
