I was listening to an old Casey Kasem American Top 40 (I find this soothing these days) from 1985 where he told the story of Wendy Carlos, who scored The Shining and Tron, and her journey to becoming trans. Casey got all the pronouns right and it was presented as a slice of life, feel good story

I suppose you could say that insisting on the rights of all trans people is issuing a political purity test. But why would you do so, while also ignoring the fact that those who refuse to enter the tent unless you push trans people out of the tent are also issuing a political purity test?

tell the cops to cut the violence, not the people. protestors are not violent, protests are not violent. actions taken in response to violence, be it to the self or to the community, are self defense and preservation. tearing families apart is violence. borders are violence. cops are violence.
Violence must stop, and we need to keep the focus on protecting fundamental rights.
There is nothing President Trump would like more than a violent confrontation with protestors to justify the unjustifiable — invocation of the Insurrection Act or some form of martial law.

of course this does not mean that normative and non-normative are categories without real and evident social power behind them, or even usefulness! but imo the impulse should always be to reveal the norm in its arbitrariness and contingency rather than aid in its assertion of natural solidity
a good lesson i think for people today is that no one is normal. the "normative" in its modern sense is downstream of methods of inventorying populations already molded by social forces and then abstracting them into ideal types that don't actually exist and cannot fully describe any one person
