I spent so much of my childhood in various fabric stores and the fact that all the ones we went to have been wiped off the map- along with the products they sold- makes me deeply sad and worried for how we can keep folks coming into these crafts.

1) He's unpopular
2) It's a personalist regime and movement built around a charismatic leader which makes it brittle
3) They aren't that patient, they're more interested in breaking things

One of my favorite uncles has lived in cali for the last 50 years but recently moved back home bc he can't afford to live there anymore and he regularly has to send his friends sign of life reassurances because they are convinced that a gay man cannot survive in Des Moines, Iowa.

I am forced to admit that part of the reason I maintain a cautious optimism about the future is the extreme care that I have taken to have my life not filled with people like this. It's easy for me to forget they exist. A blessing and a curse
one of the most depressing things of the last decade or so is realizing how many friends/ colleagues/ leaders are (a) actually sympathetic to bad faith fascistic attacks (on public goods, education, vulnerable peoples, etc.), or (b) just simply not up to the moment we find ourselves in
