I'm standing at the bus stop next to an old friend. He doesn't recognize me. Almost 30 years of meth and bad options have left him strung out and burnt out.

Marcus was the guy that seemed to die every other year and then he appears alive, again. I get why people believe in the Resurrection.

Cacophony sat across from Maeve and she was intimidatingly beautiful; voluptuous, unblemished creamy skin, full red lips, long black hair. Her steely, gray, almond-shaped eyes slowly turned to Maya and when she opened her mouth, the illusion broke. “Ya, ‘ight, I did some work for 'im. 'e were a stand up lad and paid well. but I fink 'e were a bit ov’a faggot.” Maya had heard of Cacophony, many had. The fan sites had a hard-on for her. She was a hit with the just about every demographic, even Maya had the hots for her until she heard her. Now she wondered if she got her sobriquet from her sonic abilities or if it was commentary on that hideous, cockney accent she sported.

Maya was absolutely giddy over all of this. If the world had to exceed one of her expectations, she was glad it was this one, “So, if there’s all sorts of metafauna, then what about metafl-” Schadenfreude had clamped his hand over her mouth so fast, she didn’t even see him move. “Don’t say another word. For everything you find dear, don’t.” He snatched up Thompson and slipped him into his coat, “Breakfast is ready.” He exited the tent and Maya followed, confused and feeling a little hurt.

The next morning, they packed up and headed north. Maya thought Utah looked nice, but the repression and xenophobia was oppressive. It felt like the sky was pressing down on them and she hoped to get out soon. They stopped at a gas station on the edge of some farming town called Mercurial, which was wishful thinking. It smelled of dung and hay, most of the people did too. Maya headed into the store to top off the snacks as Schadenfreude gassed up the car. She was picking out drinks when she looked down and saw Thompson, “What are you doing out and about?” “Meh!” The smell of blood and gunsmoke filled the air: the smell of disaster. “Oh fuck…” She turned to look out the windows of the convenience store, and began to dart out. The air was charged as she could feel anger and anxiety on her arm hairs like electricity, different from the suddenly brewing tempest. It was coming from Mr. Schadenfreude.

“I guess I never thought about how many people you lost. Does it change how you view death?” “No, death is death. It has changed my view on life, though. It’s hard getting close to people when you know you can outlive them. I started families here and there. I had children and their children had children. I watched them closely, being in their lives when I could be there. Time passed. People like us, we don’t get the normal lives. We can’t get those things. I realized this when I sat on my grandchild’s deathbed before old age took him. I looked younger than his children. It was hard to explain Grandpa Schadenfreude to the youngest generations, anyways. So, I left them and I haven’t looked back. They were no longer my family. That family has long since been turned to dust.”

Granny Nanny was settling down to a spliff and a cup of coffee to reward herself for an early morning’s labor. Nanny loved her chickens, they loved her back. It was practically their religion to give her eggs and then their meat, to be ground and tilled back into the soil to keep it rich and fertile. They welcomed their place in the cycle of Death and Rebirth, because their life was comfortable and filled with love. Nanny had all kinds and even bred them to sell to other farmers. She wished Schadenfreude was around, he would have gotten a kick out of her Jersey Giants. She missed her friend and he had been in her thoughts, lately. She knew he didn’t have many friends of his own, not that he wasn’t to blame. She didn’t have many either and that’s why they got along. His dark sense of humor and love of animals did help bring them together. She sighed as she untied the red bandana that held her luscious mane of silvery dreads and used it to wipe the sweat off her brow. She let the sun warm her dark skin, easing her aching muscles. She was old and had seen enough conflict to be as comfortable with it as she was on her little farm. A simple cord of leather with an old lead bullet hangs around her neck, drawing one’s eye to a star-shaped scar on her right breast. She was Nanny of the Maroons, Bane to Empires, Lion Queen of Jamaica, Strider on the Tides, the Bulletproof Bitch, the Swordbearer, The Red Horseman. She looked up and saw another of her friends coming from around the house.

“This is going to bite me in the ass for years to come, isn’t it?” Maya said dejectedly. “That’s the nature of causality. It’s all spilled milk, Maya. We do need to clean this up before it gets too sour.” Schadenfreude placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Don’t beat yourself up, even I couldn’t have predicted this.” Maya felt a little better and she felt a little better than Mr. Schadenfreude wasn’t forever angry at her. Schadenfreude actually managed his anger very well, he just chose to show it. A lot. Carl asked, “Seriously, what did Maya bring into this world?” “A thing of terrible beauty; a god-monster of epic proportion.” The Black Horseman turned it on. “A being of chaos and decay. His is Evilneezer, The Fall of Man, Bane of Order, Consumption made Flesh. His hunger and rage are eternal. And we cannot kill him in a way that matters.” “That was a little better than the story I wrote.” Maya was always a little impressed when Mr. Schadenfreude was feeling his old self. “It was still a good story. Good enough to accidentally create what may be a god of cataclysmic destruction. Though the big takeaway lesson is: be careful when constructing your summons. Mushrooms are different from plants.”

With a little adjustment here and there, Maya tuned herself into the building around them. She connected with the air, concrete and steel, feeling them like her own flesh and bones. The sound of Om drowned out everything else. The bass in her chest was spilling out into her surroundings. It was getting hard for her to tell where she ended and the meatpacking plant began. The grease rolled between her fingers as she felt the nuts and bolts of the steel catwalk. The hum of the Om vibrated through the metal. Her magics reached into the smallest nooks and crannies, every joint and bolt was held in her sway. The frictionless grease coated everything up there.
