I choose to take this as a positive omen.

I want to very gently say something, and I hope nobody will be mad: If somebody on the internet says something that is NOT about politics and NOT about how terrible everything is, it’s a kindness not to reflexively make a comment (in jest or not) that brings it back to those things.

A couple of young Oystercatchers on Redcar beach, practicing that weird walk they do whilst making loud peeps. It’s clearly a very serious and important business, but I always find it funny to watch. (Watercolour painting.)

In the bookshop this morning:

PARENTS: “Okay, we’re leaving now.”

CHILD: *pulls another book from the shelf and sits down *

CHILD: “Then I guess this is goodbye.”

A few years ago I tabled at ALA when it was in DC. The organizers asked us to make a piece of art related to reading that could be silent auctioned and I made this little scriptorium with, of course, a cat causing chaos. I don't know where it went, but I hope they still enjoy it.

Something lovely for your timeline!

Beautiful blue glass beads from the late Bronze Age.

Ploughed up by a farmer in Denmark in 1885, analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia, pointing to long-distance trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.

Word of the Day is one I keep posting at the end of the year, hoping its time will come.

‘Respair’, from the 16th century, is fresh hope, and a recovery from despair.

Here’s to a few drops of respair in 2025.
