I read so many essays on AI's biases + dangers — particularly re: its applications in governance — and think: if you swapped "big data" for "AI," this very essay could've been written 10+yrs ago. In fact, this same essay was written, 100x, 10yrs ago. The think pieces perpetuate the ahistoricism.

Anyone remember ScoMo and “hospitals are ready”, and Chris Minns hanging around outside EDs , plus the general use of mental health to make excuses to let COVID-19 into the country?

Nuclear power plants generally cost 102.5% more on average to build than estimated.

Hydrogen, CCS, and thermal power plants that rely on methane gas are also higher-risk infrastructure projects.

Solar, by contrast, is often completed ahead of schedule and for less than expected.

"The Seagull puts EV tech within reach of the average person," writes @gaytonausa.bsky.social after driving China's best-selling EV.

This is why it's a hit: it's cheap, but also good. Meanwhile, our automakers have largely given up on the "cheap" part. And that's why BYD has them spooked.
To understand why Western automakers are so afraid of China's best-selling EV, we drove one on its home turf.

It's simple. You get a dignified driving experience for $8,000. If you want that in America, go to the used car lot. insideevs.com/features/761...
You Should Be Afraid Of The BYD Seagull
China’s best-selling car is a downright dignified driving experience. I don’t know if Western automakers can replicate this experience at this price.

If BYD is serious about building an EV factory in Canada, the government should be actively pursuing it.

Chinese EVs will not stay out of North America forever, and Canada should invite them in to build cars here so we don’t lose that opportunity to the US or Mexico.

🫧🌍 Global lakes are losing oxygen – fast.

83% of large lakes have been deoxygenating since 2003. Climate warming causes over half of this decline, and heatwaves are speeding things up.

By 2100, lake oxygen could drop by nearly 9%.

I believe the policy of prohibiting Chinese AI companies from accessing the latest Nvidia GPUs is one of the dumbest decisions. What it effectively did was hand companies like Huawei a ready-made customer base for their ASICs.
