This is how rape culture and a patriarchy works. The loudest, most extroverted men get deference from the ones who prefer to avoid conflict and want to stay in the good graces of the bully. And the consequence is whatever the bullies want to do to women, it’s allowed through complicit silence.

This is a really important thread and I don't think enough men understand how pervasive this is in our culture.
I hope men understand that it is very very rare for anyone who is not a woman’s lover, close friend, or relative to stand up for her when another man insults her in a room of other men. It is incredibly unusual. They may not join in the bullying, but they’re unwilling to step in to stop it.

I cannot overemphasize that Marjorie Taylor Greene, Carlson, and Fuentes see a 2028 path to victory that involves building an isolationist populist coalition that traffics heavily in antisemitism and exploits existing negative sentiment against Israel.

We have to be SHARP on the left right now.

WOW wow wow.

Giving up the game, aren’t they?
But overwhelmingly, with the exception of that little Appalachian family church and the Black Churches, the Protestants asked if she was a member, or hung up on her.

One pastor told her, verbatim: “Benevolence is for our members.”

i think too of how those ancestry websites were designed in ways to be oh soothing and e-z to use, basically built from the ground up to get older computer users to relax while using it. so somebody who's afraid of looking at 'settings' in their phone will still send a company their DNA. wild shit.

very strange transformation over the years to watch older family members go from "i will download literally anything, i will put 8 thousand toolbars on this browser" to "i will not touch or look up anything about how to adjust my computer or phone because what if it activates a hunter/killer mode"

one of the more frustrating things about AI shit is that it, unfortunately, represents how a lot of older types think the computer should work ("ask it questions, get answers, talk with it") and normal interaction with a computer makes them terrified they'll hit a "blow up everything" button

This is, of course, a fascinating thread from Kate asking why Google is effectively cannibalizing its own market for both digital ads on third party properties and search ads, by effectively taking away the incentive to click through to third party sites. I have a theory as to why they're doing it.
So this ad revenue metric is indicative of such a fascinating and weird set of business decisions by Google to inexplicably kill of SEO-- and I honestly don't get how they think this is going to pay off for them in the long run.

I guess the irony of the phrase is that learning how these crafts were done, and being able to replicate a centuries old art has a lot of inherent cultural value.

Disparaging liberal arts is missing out on the sheer joy of connecting with history; producing beautiful & functional items.

Read The Art of War!

We've got such advice as:
1. Soldiers need to eat.
2. Horses need to eat.
3. You should bluff your enemy.
4. Seriously, though, if you don't feed your army, you lose.
5. Best strategy: steal the enemy's food. It's worth double points.

Call me old fashioned, but I remember when armed agents of the state barking, "where are your papers!?" was a thing that Americans associated with other, less free, less enlightened countries.

The US has become a "papers please" country.
Email just went out on my campus that the Immigration Goons ("federal immigration agents") will be in town (Raleigh).

Inter alia, it says,"International students, faculty and staff should carry evidence of their immigration status with them at all times."

The fuck kind of country are we living in?

The reason why socialism is no longer taboo in America is that our elites have successfully rebranded it as “any attempt by the state to function beyond semi-random violence“ while trying to combat it.
