For anyone who was born after the invention of AZT, this may seem like it was a logical, if ambitious, goal.
When I was a kid, AZT was not yet widely available. HIV was a rapidly ticking clock to certain, tragic death within years.
I cannot express what a miracle it is to see this in my lifetime.

This. The number of times your brain will automatically solve a seemingly insurmountable story problem while you’re working on a subsequent bit of the story will astound you.
Stuck in a scene? Do what the pros do: use brackets. Write what the story beat is:

Then just keep writing what happens after. Maintaining momentum is key to getting the most words on the page. Meanwhile solutions often present themselves later.

It's fascinating reading old D&D zines and hearing people say "hits" instead of hit points. "It only has about 13 hits left," and "5 hits" for "I did five damage."
Almost certainly this means they imagined their characters making several "attacks" on their round, resolved with a single roll.
