If you want to understand what is happening in the US, these two books are recommended. They outline the political and economic forces that successfully destroyed prior democratic systems (and how those forces weakened institutions). You can find many parallels to what the US is experiencing today.
Why Nations Fail by Acemoglu and Robinson is a good modern work.

Political Parties: A Sociological Study of the Oligarchial Tendencies of Modern Democracy by Robert Michel is an older work that remains highly relevant.

My Trade Secrets today. Imagine the US in 1957 had seen the Sputnik satellite overhead & said "Nah, we'll leave space to the Soviets".

Thanks to climate change denial, mindless prejudice and trade protectionism, that's just what it's doing now with China & green tech, esp EVs and batteries. 1/2

The climate and biodiversity costs to opening up roadless areas are astronomical. The roadless rule protects over half of Tongass National Forest, which is home to over 400 species of wildlife and stores more than 10% of the carbon accumulated by all national forests across the US.
The Trump administration said that it would open up 58 million acres of back country in national forests to road construction and development, removing protections that had been in place for a quarter century.
Trump Administration to End Protections for 58 Million Acres of National Forests
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the Clinton-era rule barring road construction and logging was outdated and “absurd.”

👀 Scoop: Trump and Republicans want USPS to sell off its brand new EVs and chargers.

That would mean literally **ripping up post office parking lots** to auction off assets with no private-sector value.

It’s buried in the Senate’s “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

Mass protests are an implicit threat of potential violence even when they are entirely peaceful.

They serve to keep state power in check by demonstrating “there are more of us than you so fix your shit.”

The state knows this, which is why its agents often respond to them with unprovoked violence.

Anyone know when California plans to file suit challenging the federal mobilization of National Guard troops without the Governor’s consent and the domestic deployment of U.S. Marines?

These are both well-established legal rules currently being violated.

Scientists,

I am asking us to do something that goes against our nature:

Step away from fine-grained, nuanced arguments. Zoom WAY out. Share the big picture. Don’t soften the seriousness of this moment with “xxx may be ok in xxx circumstances” talk.

It’s uncomfortable AND necessary.

Ok, someone needs to explain this. Either vaccines are bad, in which case why are we giving them to the most vulnerable members of society, or they are effective at preventing serious illness and should be widely available for all.

The Administration has arrested a judge in WI and a mayor in NJ, and is threatening to arrest federal lawmakers. In any other country we would say the strongman's security forces are locking up political opponents. We need to treat it exactly that way here. www.axios.com/2025/05/10/t...

The slow but steady collapse of modern America is under way. Everything is being defunded. Public schools, public transit, public health, anything else "public." Our society can't function without these things. And Democrats are too slow to act.
