Oh wow! This is what happens when you're photographing MSS & don't capture the text in the inner gutter. 1st, here's the photograph (made about 100 yrs ago) of the Codex Salernitanus, f. 82ra. Although that big tear of the page is obvious, the inner gutter hasn't been fully captured in the photo.

Clothing and Meaning-Making in Early Christianity (online) Organizers: Arthur Urbano (aurbano@providence.edu) & Robin Jensen (robinmjensen@gmail.com) For this online session organized by the International Catacomb Society, we are seeking papers that address the theme “Clothing and Meaning-Making in Early Christianity”. Garments were a defining aspect of Roman society, serving as markers of status, gender, ethnicity, profession, and so on, part of what Terence Turner coined as “the social skin.” The curation and adornment of the body were not necessarily personal choices, but determined by custom, and sometimes mandated by law, locating individuals within a complex of social categories. But garments are not limited to material forms. They can also be verbalized as text, appearing in literary sources as conveyors of meaning, in the form of metaphor, allegory, or symbol. They also appear visualized in art, not simply displaying what actual garments looked like, but part of the code of the overall composition, contributing to the image’s meaning. Early Christians both subscribed to and challenged the sartorial norms of Roman society and produced material, verbal, and visual garments that created and conveyed meaning. For this session we are looking for papers that specifically address meaning-making through material, textual, and/or visual clothing in Early Christian contexts. This could include textiles with embroidered images, or other material remains; allegorical exegesis of biblical garments, or symbolic interpretations of ascetic or episcopal garments; or, interpretations of garments as represented in catacomb frescoes, or on sarcophagi, or in the mosaics of churches. Alternatively, the complex messaging in garments adorned with both Christian and traditional iconography, such as Dionysian imagery, presents another lens through which to explore the “social skin” of Early Christianity.

Never thought of it! In games like Skyrim or Fallout, with dialogues and gender flexible main character design, you can't use past tense in Slavic languages! You have to translate dialogues avoiding first person past tense as it is configured by gender!

it's very hard to do in Polish but not impossible, I had to do it when I used to translate video games like Fallout 2, where you can choose the gender of player character but we had to match English lines 1:1.

From Bronze Age Wales, the spectacular Mold Cape! 🤩

An incredible ancient feat of sheet-goldworking, beaten from a single gold ingot some 3,600 years ago!

The extraordinary embossed decoration is said to mimic strings of beads.

My photo shows the ‘Mold Cape’ on an upright metal stand inside a British Museum display case. It is a Bronze Age object made of thin hammered gold. The sheet gold is curved and looks like a stiff, rounded poncho. The surface is densely decorated with rows of repeating patterns made of circular bosses and lozenges, which run horizontally around the cape. These are thought to imitate strings of beads. The gold is a deep, warm colour which shines in the display lighting. Cracks and repaired sections are visible. The Mold Cape would be worn over the chest and shoulders. Arm movement would be restricted due to the rigidity of the gold. This amazing artefact was discovered in 1833 by workmen digging for stone in a burial mound at Bryn yr Ellyllon, (Hill of the Goblins) near Mold in Flintshire.

Bellum, Latin for 'war', is the origin of martial English words like 'belligerent', 'bellicose' and 'rebel'.

Bellum was a later form of the word. It had previously been duellum, before a 'DU > B' sound change, and Latin writers remembered and continued to use the old form too. This gave us 'duel'.

The library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a marvel.

I just found a rare gap in Classics -- they didn't have László Török's 1997 classic overview of Kush (Napata, Meroe).

And, within like an hour of finding out, the responsible librarian ordered it.

AFAIK, this phenomenon of redundant prepositional conjugation is similar to what happened in Irish, where (going even further) some of the 3ms forms became grammaticalized as new prepositions:

Irish faoi "under, about" < Old Irish foí "under (fo) him"

Irish as "from" < Old Irish ass "from (a) him"
Pronominal Anticipation with Prepositions. Prepositions with noun complements are often anticipated by a redundant prepo-sition with a pronominal enclitic complement agreeing with the noun complement of the following, "real" prepositional phrase. Thus, either ba-mditta or bah ba-mditta for 'in the city,' and either emret l-gabra or emret leh l-gabra for 'I said to the man.' These constructions are extremely frequent in Syriac narrative prose.

As a former opera singer this makes perfect sense. Consonants are typically brief, & plosive sounds can't be sustained. But vowel sounds can be sustained for long durations (how much breath do you have?) and with more volume - perfect for underwater long distance communication 🐳
