The whole thing is exquisite ribbed (for your pleasure) concrete. Yet it’s soft and quiet, a moon safari in the sky. Hotel Bonaventure. Built above the rail lines even. Canada: once great.

Renting an apartment in Plaza St Hubert this week but must come back for this next time.
My favourite hotel on earth (at least in Montreal). It is really a brutalist low rise motor hotel high a top of a concrete plinth. It remains gorgeous & perfect 60 years later. Heaven.

Some breaking news: in a special Vancouver Police Board meeting only announced over the weekend, the police board has requested a $50 million increase to their budget for 2026.

This comes as other departments across the city are trying to cut staff to ensure a property tax freeze for next year.

Honestly gobsmacked by ABC's referral of my road safety motion to staff.

Halloween is the most dangerous night of the year for CHILDREN.

This was an attempt to use an existing process to keep CHILDREN safe, and ABC punted it to staff w/o offering an alternative.

Really, guys?

The “Poet of Confederation” Thomas D’Arcy McGee helps us understand why not being American IS at the heart of being Canadian.

I’m very proud of this. Please share if you enjoy!

What he said.
It was a great pleasure to work with this great team at @thedialmag.bsky.social on this piece, something of a love letter to Canadian cultural nationalism interspersed with political and economic history. It all reverberates in Canada’s terrible position vis-a-vis the Trump admin. today 🇨🇦🍁
Canada’s embrace of free trade with the U.S. 40 years ago has come back to haunt it. To understand how, Dónal Gill winds the clock back to 1988 — the year the country abandoned its axiomatic principle: its separateness from the U.S.

Learned from Richard Holmes that Holst set Tennyson's songs from The Princess for a capella female choir (1907). They are wonderful: the Edwardian afterglow of Victorian Britain.

An excellent essay from @michaelledgerlomas.bsky.social
‘Although Cecil Rhodes talked of securing the future, power for him was not a means to an end but the expression of a need to treat people as objects to “quicken and control”.’

One more scoop
‘Rhodes and his first employer, Charles Rudd, found it easier to make money on side ventures, such as buying a steam-powered ice machine to sell refreshments to miners (Rhodes scooped the ice cream).’
