My office is on Brick Lane. Every day we push through hordes of tourists who are there to marvel at the exciting success story that is that neighbourhood, London and the Uk more generally.

Building successful multi cultural & confessional democracies is one of the greatest achievements in history
Still true:
*Britain is a success story
*Most of its cities are doing astonishingly well
*Multiculturalism is popular
*Mass immigration has not led to social disintegration
*Nostalgia is increasingly weird
*Britain is incredibly safe
*Levels of social cohesion are high
Don't let them gaslight you.

I could spend all day doing this. Place is amazing. We just don't talk about it much because a) we're British and it's embarrassing b) practical patriotism is about recognising what needs fixing, not celebrating what's already been done

Such a brilliant post. No-one is better placed to put the ‘reset’ in perspective.

No matter how often Brexit seeks to shapeshift its brute stupidities remain unchanged and seemingly unchangeable.
That was the reset that was. New post on my Brexit & Beyond Blog evaluating the framing and content of the UK-EU reset Summit, political reactions to it, and what it says about Labour's post-Brexit approach to the EU: chrisgreybrexitblog.blogspot.com/2025/05/that...

💥 This is the type of speech Starmer could have given on immigration. But unlike the Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez, Starmer doesn't seem to feel any sense of duty, protection, or thanks towards the foreigners in the UK who are holding this country together.

Many of the scientists that the Trump administration is defunding and persecuting will be working on strategically important technologies and research areas. The UK and other European countries should urgently establish programmes to bring those researchers here.

I say space of influence not sphere because none of these states now have a sphere of influence: China doesn't; Russia has spent 33 years failing to create one; the Trump administration has just dismantled the US's. But influence now shapes their relations with one another. cepa.org/article/a-re...
A Return to Spheres of Influence? Don’t Be Silly
Even if spheres of influence were sustainable, the behavior of the US and Russia show it’s not a workable idea.

Ukraine is Europe!
We stand by Ukraine.

We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the agressor.

Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.
