Albertans Are Driving Their Government Crazy by Following New Laws Too Much | The Walrus

On October 1, Guy Felicella published an op-ed in the Calgary Herald responding to a piece written by Marshall Smith that favoured expansion of police power to address public drug use. On October 6, a...

I thought that the Alberta Next panel was consulting Albertans on the idea of the province gaining more control over immigration. Or is the purpose of Alberta Next to generate support for ideas that the UCP already wants to pursue or is pursuing?

I think this essay, which is not about Alberta, actually is about Alberta. About the resentment and fear many in our resource sectors feel when they see - or foresee - the loss of high paying jobs that didn’t require much or any post-secondary education.

Danielle Smith & the UCP have decided you don’t deserve to know how they’re spending your $.

The Friday before a long weekend, they removed the requirement for the Premier, Ministers & senior staff to publicly post their receipts.

They say it’s too much “red tape.”

This quote in particular applies to Alberta
'It's not just about the risk of measles -but what measles represents: More than an infectious disease flare-up.
A symbol of broken trust, eroded progress, rise of individualism replacing collective good, and a system cracking under the weight of disinvestment and distrust.'

Calling all "fiscal conservatives". A thousand times this👇👇👇
Mayor Brandon Scott has reduced crime in Baltimore by 62%, and now has the lowest homicide rate in Baltimore history.

How did he do it?

NOT be spending more on police. He did it by MAJOR investment in afterschool and literacy programs.

Hmmm. As they say, both things can be true
In April, the UCP claimed Alberta had a $5B deficit & used it to underfund healthcare & education.

Now, just under 4 moths, they announced $8B surplus. That’s $13B swing in160 days.

How?

They either misled Albertas or they’re fiscally incompetent.
Alberta ends 2024-25 fiscal year with $8.3 billion surplus thanks to oil, taxes
The surplus represents a significant swing from both Budget 2024's slim surplus and Budget 2025's forecasted deficit of more than $5 billion

The government shouldn't be campaigning during a genuine public consultation.

And the panel should have control over the engagement materials, including the website and surveys.

This is a propaganda exercise and panelists would be wise to consider their role in it.
