one of the David Graeber things that really fucked me up was learning about how in some cultures you only clear your debts with someone to signal you are cutting them out of your life for good, it’s like the hardest non-violent insult, the bridge is burned
"you don't owe other people anything!!" ok the flipside of that is that they don't owe you anything either and frankly that sounds like a terrible way to live
