My Fulbright allowed me to study how state sponsored homophobia and myopic global health policies align to worsen the health of queer Kenyans. Never thought I’d find myself defending the “soft power” of the US State Dpt given its perpetuation of US exceptionalism and homonationalism and yet…
My Fulbright scholarship and research changed my life, and helped me get into Columbia for grad school.

It’s what made me decide to pursue journalism. I still advise Fulbrighters.

The admin is destroying soft power through international knowledge exchange and America will be worse off for it.

Similarly my Fulbright fellowship was life-changing and helped cement my path to becoming a professor.

“Unequivocally, no blame in this falls on Signal,” says White. “Signal is a communication tool designed for confidential conversations. If someone's brought into a conversation who’s not meant to be part of it, that's not a technology problem. That's an operator issue.”

“Signal is a tool. If you misuse a tool, bad things are going to happen. If you hit yourself in the face with a hammer, it’s not the hammer’s fault. It’s really on you to make sure you know who you’re talking to.”
SignalGate Isn't About Signal
The Trump cabinet’s shocking leak of its plans to bomb Yemen raises myriad confidentiality and legal issues. The security of the encrypted messaging app Signal is not one of them.

Garcia: "Are you sure Ms. Kerger? Because he is red."

"Well, he is a puppet, but no," Kerger replied.”

COWARDS.
Columbia continues to destroy itself in the malign and stupid effort to hang on to Zionist and federal money (which it doesn't really need).

Today's slaughter includes the expulsion of the president of the grad worker union. A day before bargaining is due to begin.

one of the maddening things about being in discourse studies or rhetoric is that whenever we tell people that bad actors love to appropriate the language of their enemies values in order to subvert them and confuse onlookers, people simply don’t see it until it’s too late!!
I’m struck by the Trump administration’s attempt to redefine equality as discrimination against white people. This is a deeply racist idea that *equal outcomes* must be unfair, assuming white people are naturally at the top of the hierarchy.

This woulda been me in 2024-2016. Straight outta grad school on an already barely livable salary (by NYC standards) as a T32 postdoc at Columbia. Wonder if the admin is rethinking their strategy now that they’ve been smacked down despite their capitulation
I have confirmation from several sources now that all T32s, many F30s and F31s, and most or all Center awards (P30, P50) have been terminated at Columbia.

This is quite damaging to research and to individuals.

This is pure terrorism and cannot be legal. But litigation will take time...

NEW: White House says the arrest and deportation of student activist & legal US resident, Mahmoud Khalil, is a blueprint for more.

The final line here is chilling. The White House specifically says Khalil was not breaking the law.

No evidence, no due process, no crime. He was just disappeared.
