This is very cool. I would not have assumed, though it makes perfect sense, how much language he drew from the news article. This would make such a great lesson on primary sources and the different types of documentary evidence, historical memory, and the economic & labor history of the Great Lakes!
For the midnight crew on this #EdmundFitzgwtald50 anniversary, I have added more markups to the Newsweek article that gave Gordon Lightfoot his template for His "Wreck of" song lyrics.

Concerning, not only for those immediately impacted, but as with shocking events anywhere now, this will quickly take on a social media/conspiracy life of its own. Hindutva groups/ actors won't waste time pinning this on already/always embattled minority communities. Praying for calm and truth.
This is a very concerning development...

And we should honor the German connections all the more because of the great Friedrich Max Müller. There's a Muller Bhavan (Goethe-Institut) in Delhi named in his honor. Wouldn't be surprised if the word Bhavan itself has interesting I-E connections.
I really love the German connections too. Here's another example: The sanskrit root: "स्था - sthā" means to stand or remain in place. It's 3rd person singular present indicative is "तिष्ठति - tíṣṭhati" which comes out in the German word "Tisch," in English "Table".

Indo-European linguistic connections like this are so cool. So too, "pur" or "puri" (British spelling, "pore") in many place names in India, e.g., Jodhpur, Jaipur, Kanpur.
Another example: "knowledge." Greek "γνώ" as in gnosis, Sanskrit "ज्ञा" as in jnana, and English "kno" as in know/ledge.

50th anniversary of this Great Lakes tragedy, the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Its fascinating, and adds to the lore, that there are still multiple freighters of the same type (some of which were with the Fitz on that night, and helped in the initial search) still plying the lakes. More below.

Chuck Schumer Helps Pull Democrats Back From Brink Of Courage
A horrid thing about our moment (last couple decades) is that we keep getting into these self-inflicted crises *directly caused* by GOP incompetence & corruption, & yet every single one somehow gets framed as the Dems’ responsibility. And too often, the Dems oblige by going along with that narrative

It’s great that at his age he’s still “got it” to this degree. Gotta respect the man for the way he continues to speak truth and fight.
Sanders: That is a totally meaningless gesture. You can get 100 votes here and it won't mean anything because the House is not going to take it up.

The craziest part is that Republicans could’ve ended the shutdown on their own anytime they wanted. 50 senators is all it would take.
But they didn’t feel like it. Which is accepted as a premise, so fixing things becomes Democrats’ responsibility, and apparently enough Democratic senators agree.
