“It’s ok to be white” was an online slogan used by overt white supremacist groups just a few years ago. Now it’s being used on stage in front of cameras by the vice president of the United States.

People are rightly disgusted by this speech, but it’s a measure of fascism’s normalization that many see this as more of the awful same rather than what I think most of us who’ve been reporting this beat hear it as: a significant calculated escalation. Full alert stuff.

I cannot emphasize enough that the White House has no authority to withhold funds from the Smithsonian. It can, however, try to persuade/threaten Congress to reduce future funding.
“American people will have no patience” for any museum that is “uncomfortable conveying a positive view of American history,” Trump aides wrote.

"It was not immediately clear how much money the White House might try to withhold, from which parts of the Smithsonian or on what authority."
White House threatens Smithsonian funds in sweeping content review
It is not clear on what authority the administration could withhold Smithsonian funds, as President Trump tries to purge “woke” content from cultural institutions.

Rand Paul: "All these designations are steps towards war -- calling drug runners terrorists, saying, 'Oh, if they have a designation'-- Well, how'd they get it? We gave it to them. Why is the former president of Honduras released? So some narcoterrorists are okay & others we're going to blow up"

Trump, Sept. 20, in reference to Erik Siebert, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia: “He didn’t quit, I fired him!”

Trump’s deputy AG, three months later: Siebert wasn’t fired, he quit.

These guys keep assuming that we all have bad memories.
WELKER: Is the DOJ taking directions about who to prosecute from President Trump?

BLANCHE: No. Of course we're not. And also, Mr. Siebert wasn't fired because he refused to bring cases. He resigned.

One thing worth remembering as all of this Epstein stuff roils is that we know of multiple occasions in which women were paid to keep them from talking about having sex with Trump.
WELKER: Why was this photo of a desk with a drawer open containing photos of Trump taken down?

BLANCHE: You can see in that photo there are photos of women. We learned there were concerns about them.

W: Are you saying those women are victims of Epstein?

B: No, that's not what I'm saying.
