Typically incisive and optimistic post from Eric. As he says, if this large effect were the product of Alzheimer’s research it would be hailed as a huge breakthrough. And yet, in the UK, those of us between 65 and 70 can’t get the vaccine on the NHS (v expensive as private purchase)…
The Shingles vaccine and reduction of dementia: a new natural experiment from Canada replicated 3 others and adds to this week's link to slowing of biological aging.

Government could start by not going out of its way to screw the entire knowledge work sector. Just spitballing here. Maybe back your creatives when they say they've been ripped off by huge tech firms instead of finding ways to give our work to megacorps free of charge? I dunno man it's a MYSTERY...

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Good morning with good news: India meets 50% renewables & nuclear capacity target 5 years early!

As clean capacity deploys, clean electricity production surges.

Solar grew from 5 TWh in 2014 to 48 TWh in 2019 & 137 TWh in 2024.

Hydro was 157 TWh; wind 82 TWh; nuclear 55 TWh in 2024. #energysky

Only 2 years since the ban on neonics, France's population of insect-eating birds has risen 2-3% - from banning a single type of insecticide. Demonstrating just how much harm we cause birds when pesticides kill off the insects they need for food.

Good news: Study shows France’s birds making tentative recovery after neonicotinoid pesticide ban

UK has only just closed loophole in neonics ban (‘derogations’) so may be too soon to see recovery here?

I will keep saying this until I am blue in the face; we have been in a disinfo/propaganda war with Russia since 2014, & it's one of the few things their military is genuinely excellent at, & we're fucking LOSING

Farage, Trump, Brexit, Transphobia, the rise of the far right - they're pushing it all
Note that if it's happening in the Fediverse it is ABSOLUTELY DEFINITELY happening here on Bsky.
Since 15 Sept IFTAS has tracked a network of over 300 Mastodon accounts engaged in a high-volume propaganda campaign, promoting pro-Russian narratives:
