In addition to MLB's FanDuel partnership, I think that the exploitative nature of MLB's Dominican academies played a role here. Would Dominican players be less desperate to make money if they weren't told from childhood that their communities depended on them doing so?

It's a little odd that this article doesn't discuss Benicio Del Toro's character, but I do ultimately agree that the film fell into some of the same patterns, re: portrayals of Black women, that it was attempting to critique.

Wasn’t able to watch WS live but apparently the Jonas Bros did some of a song at some point? I cannot express this urgently enough: NO. Baseball is not meant to be associated with entertainment. The beauty of baseball is its uninterrupted agony. The outside world must be barred from the stadiums.

yearly reminder to people insisting that we view Christopher Columbus as "a man of his time" that *the people responsible for the Spanish Inquisition* thought Columbus was out of pocket
Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.

Mamdani invoking the memory of Sylvia Rivera, a staunch anti-imperialist who very much framed trans liberation as part of the liberation of all oppressed peoples throughout the world, just days after calling Cuba a dictatorship really is something.
UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

I’m sorry but I think folks can often be too harsh with Sarah. 95 Ds voted YES bc of leadership, why single her out so often?

She got elected statewide in Delaware. Her path is challenging and this time is terrifying. I think the disagreements w/ her can be less personal. I care about her safety.

My job as a professor is not to create a serviceable worker. My job is to help foster thoughtful citizens or community members.

If that sounds fanciful it’s bc corporate interests have spent decades framing how we talk about education so they don’t take the heat for immiserating labor conditions.
Do not accept the premise that education is to blame for abysmal jobs outcomes.

“The fantasy economy's framing of economic inequality… focuses exclusively on education…deflects attention away from decades of public policies and changing business practices that have…contributed to stagnating wages”

Since the Balfour Declaration, Western Civilization has tied itself to the settler colonial project that is Israel. Palestinian liberation will bring the West (and therefore liberalism) to its knees, so long as we continue crafting a coherent theory of socialism to capitalize on this moment.
What's your take on the moment we're living through in 50 words or less. [you able to quote post]

baseball is the greatest sport ever invented
With last night's loss in Cincinnati, the #Phillies became the first team in history to lose 4,000 night games.

Perhaps fitting, since they also lost the first night game in major league history, on May 24, 1935.

Also in Cincinnati.

Sure, have yet another celebrity run for president to further expose the deep unseriousness at the heart of this country's constitutional order and media apparatus. The path to freedom lies not in the office of the presidency.
“I was skeptical about a Stewart candidacy, but maybe ‘The Daily Show’ host is the right person to shake up the Democratic presidential primaries.”

Should Jon Stewart Run for President in 2028?

Legalized same-sex marriage gave a lot of people access to a lot of important resources, but it was also a mistake to make it the end of the queer rights movement. Doing so tied queer people to the liberal state that is dependent on the subjugation of queer people. We've gotta think bigger.
this is tragically going to work. they’re going to roll back all rights to before the time of ronald reagan and it’s going to take so much to reverse course of this fascism

Marginalized people in the West will scream, with their whole chest, that they had no choice but to join the imperialism machine! They were impoverished, marginalized, subject to so much pain, and they took a lifeline out for money! Plus they didn't kill anyone, just did logistics!

Good for you.

Yes Israel won't let "international journalists" into Gaza because that'd make their crimes more visible. But also because their crimes include…killing journalists! It's easier to dehumanize & smear Palestinian reporters in order to justify killing them, than a Western reporter.
