This post makes me think about a book I read recently that was poorly translated (perhaps even just with software?)
It was really sad because I could *see* glimmers of the prose and story beneath it, but with a bad English translation, it made the whole thing feel amateurish.

Walter Benjamin wrote that the work of translation is “to liberate the language imprisoned in a work" to find the “pure language” of “the unfathomable, the mysterious, the ‘poetic’”. This is all, of course, utterly anathema to AI
As a multiple language speaker it's also frustrating to see people using AI for translation because the English speaking world tends to treat translators like workers for hire instead of co authors of text and this feels like more of it. Translation at the literary level is creative work.

Driving while listening to my own Christmas playlist, and the overture to the Nutcracker started playing. My eyes welled up a bit remembering seeing the Nutcracker with my mom, but I remembered Ahiru singing a little song to the tune of the overture in ep1 of Princess Tutu, and I absolutely crumpled

Blocklists are a feature with far far more harmful potential than genuine use cases. Straight up don’t use them. Curate your own experience as needed, don’t rely on crowdsourced moderation tools or callouts in an internet rife with bad actors and transmisogynistic social murder

Their one move: copy/create blocklists w/actual trashbags & Nazis then add (innocent, unsuspecting, non-trashbag) trans accts.

This is the next phase that Kiwi Farms members have stated they will do - constructing look-alike blocklists and then adding popular trans people to them after the fact, once the blocklist is seeded in the community. Make sure any block list you use says who runs it.
